House remodel registry

I've seen quite a few posts regarding honeymoon registries but my fiance and I have a more unique request and are looking for input.

We in NO way want to be tacky or offend any of our guests by asking for "cash", however, we have out grown our town home and would like to make some upgrades so we can sell it and move into a new home.

We do still plan on making a small registry for traditional houshold items but the fact that we've out grown this house makes us not wnat to come home from the wedding with a truck load of gifts and no place to put anything.

Does anyone have any ideas on how we could go about this?

Re: House remodel registry

  • If people ask about a registry, you can say something like "We have everything we need, but we're saving up for some much-needed home repairs."  You can also enlist your family or bridal party to tell people (again, if ASKED) the same thing.

Realize that a lot of people might give you gifts anyway.   In some circles, people prefer to give physical gifts for weddings, while in others people prefer to give cash.   However, I will say that some of my absolute favorite wedding gifts did NOT come from our registry :-)

  • hi,
my weddin is near bur my house looks dull, can anyone give me tips how can i furnish it so that it looks attractive?
  • We're literally in the same boat. My fiance already has a home and its definitely a fixer upper house. We basically have everything we need as far as registry items so not much need there, we just need to remodel and it's going to take time and money. So yes I'd also like to know how you could ask for monetary gifts towards remodeling our home..

  • I second PP about registering at Sear's or Home Depot - who says you need to register for kitchen stuff?  Although you wouldn't "register" for gift cards, I think I have gift cards as a option on my registery.  Just want to put it out there that if it's a huge faux pas to ask for cash, then isn't creating a gift registery essentially the same thing?  You're picking out specific items that you would like your guests to spend money on?  I guess I fail to see the line between cash/gift cards/gift registery.  To me, it's all the same IMO.
  • If you are planning to DIY much of the improvements, I would register for tools and some supplies from Sears.  A registry doesn't have to be just for mixers and sheets.

You can register at Home Depot & Lowes for the bigger supplies, but that gets a little trickier.  They don't offer a normal registry like most stores do.  Instead, when you register at one, your registry is only at that one.  People can't see it online or go to different stores to see the same things.  If there's a project where you need a lot of something (say a load of concrete), it might make sense, but since it isn't the same as a regular store registry, you probably wouldn't want to put pavers or lumber, because the various loads might not all be the same.  On the other hand, you could register for your paint because it all comes out the same.  If you did include something from there, I would do just a couple of items so that people can see what projects you are working on, and hopefully get inspired to get you gift cards.
  • You have all helped so much!  I don't at all feel comfortable registering or asking for cash, its just gready even if we are putting the gifts towards upgrading our home.  I also know we can't very well register for a new toilet or tile for the back splash... well maybe tile.  :)

We'll do a small registry for things we can that we'll incorporate in our remodel and spread the word that we're doing some remodeling so that we can sell and look for a new house after the wedding.  We know our family and friends know us well and most of them would love to give us what we need, not a "pile of picture frames"  :)

    Thanks again!  Problem solved!
