Is a kayak a stupid idea?

My fiance and I are live on Long Island Sound and are very sporty.  We are thinking of registering for a kayak but all of the nice models are hitting the $400 and above mark.  And that is without the paddle.

Is it presumptuous to add it to our registry?

  • All other things being equal, not presumptuous. $300 is not an unheard-of price for a wedding gift, and people/family groups will often go in to gether on wedding gifts.

Your registry is a request, not a demand. Like your invitations are invitations, not subpoenas. Also, couples are often damned if they do, damned if they don't on registries. Too many inexpensive items, and you're implying your guests are cheap. Too many expensive things, and you're grabby. So it's best to register for what you actually want.
  • not unreasonable. many people like going in on group gifts. and people will be thrilled to get you guys what you really really want!
  • I would totally buy a kayak as a wedding gift if I could afford it! Lots of couples these days register for camping gear - I think it goes right along with that! Also, with after-wedding discounts at many stores, you could end up using any cash you recieve as gifts to buy it at a cheaper price after the wedding if no one gets it for you. Go for it!

  • I think as long as you don't have a number of items with that pricetag you're fine.  You should ask for what you want and what you will use.  Personally, I would rather get together with a couple friends and each chip in money for a couple's high priced item and know they'll use it and love it, than spend my money on an item that might sit in a cabinet.  And as a bride, when we were registering, we put two higher priced electrics on the list, thinking that some of our family members will give it as a gift together.  We also thought of registering for some camping stuff.  I know when my family has gone to weddings, we also buy some of the pricier stuff together.

I'm going for the kayak!

I know what you mean...I felt the same about the ScanPan set I want so bad. I wasn't going to register for it bc it's a ludicrous amount of $ for someone to gift on effin' pans, but I get 10% off after the registry is over and FI said he'd buy them for me after the wedding. I know a few stores that offer discounts, so I'd maybe just inquire.

I know my thoughts of other people's registries have evolved over my life, if it makes you feel better. Things I once thought were dumb on registries now seem totally practical :)
  • I read on the boards where one person said pretty much as long as its not an item specifically for one person... like, a blow dryer for the bride, or something like that, it should be okay.
  • That would make a great group gift!   totally do it!
  • We're planning on registering for a few spendier items not because we think someone will get them, but so that we can get a discount to purchase from our registry after the wedding.

Not sure if places that sell kayaks would offer that, but you never know :)

And would be a great group gift like everyone else has mentioned.
