Kindles for our BP?

I was having a tough time thinking of a bm gift that all my girls would like (I know they don't have to all be the same, I just would prefer it if they were), but then I realized that they all love to read so a Kindle would be perfect!  

And then I was thinking that FI's groomsmen might also like one, so I asked him and he liked the idea, until I told him that they were $79 each and he did the math and realized that it would come to a grand total of $790. 

So, I guess I have 2 or 3 questions...

1) How much are you planning to spend on each member of your BP?

2) Do you have a Kindle?  Do you like it?

I spent about $150 on my girls but I only had two of them so I was able to spend more than if I would of had a big bridal party.
I don't have the Kindle but I have the Nook and love it (they are both basically the same) but since you have a big bridal party I wouldn't spend that much but hey of you can afford it then go for it! I recieved my Nook as a gift and was super excited when I opened it.

I spent $100 on my MOH (my sister), but she was the only person I had to buy for.

Just a thought from another person who loves to read: I don't want a Kindle.  I love books with pages.  If you bought me a Kindle, it would sit unused or be resold.  If you know all of your BMs want one, then by all means, go ahead and buy them.  However, if you are just basing it off their love of reading, you might be surprised that some book lovers aren't interested.

Look, as a Kindle owner, I don't think this is a good idea.  It took me a LONG time to warm up to the idea, and frankly, now that I have the Kindle Fire, if someone would have gotten me the cheap Kindle for Christmas or my birthday in the past, I really would not have appreciated it.  

To put it this way, getting a Kindle is a highly personal choice.  I know that seems like a weird way of putting it, but avid readers are either highly for or against it.  Similarly, you don't even know if that's the device they would want.  Maybe they want a Nook or some other e-reader.  Maybe they want a Fire and just haven't bought it yet.  All this is aside from the fact you're sounding a little concerned about the cost.  I think you could find something that would be greatly more appreciated for less than $50.

I absolutely love my Kindle.  It's one of my favorite things in the whole world.  Having said that, I agree with mcskatcat.  While I love my Kindle, and know a lot of people who also love theirs, it's a lousy gift.  Would you buy everyone you know a laptop computer?  Or a digital camera?   Or a cell phone?    Of course not, because people have different preferences when it comes to personal electronics.  Just becuase someone loves books doesn't mean they'll love a Kindle.  And even if they would like some kind of e-reader, there are many choices with different features, and no ten people will all enjoy the same one, just like no ten people would ever pick the exact same laptop or digital camera.

I LOVE my kindle - quite possibly the best gift I've ever got.  However, I think $79 is a lot to spend on BP gifts, esp. for the "base" model.  And what if some of them already have an e-reader?  And I do find it hard to believe that every single person of the WP loves to read enough to own a Kindle.  Very generous thought, but I'd probably pass on it.

I plan to spend about $75 per BM -- but it's also fine to spend less. Just spend what you can afford! But I have to agree with the majority of others about the Kindle -- I love to read but I wouldn't use one -- people are either in love or they hate them!.

When I looked into getting a Kindle for myself, I noticed how small the screens are. Have you noticed that? I'd hate to read on something so small. But the larger screen model is like, $300. Also, the base model has ads. I think that expensive technology like that is best left for the user to purchase, unless you know exactly what they want, because otherwise it's something that's not quite what they wanted, and you still spent a bundle on it.

I LOVE my kindle.  But I have the kindle fire.  Anyways - I was going to get one of my bm's the fire for a wedding gift but she went out and bought the nook..... Because she said she would rather have that instead.  Different strokes for different folks.  I would try to get them something else.

I have a Kindle and honestly I hate it.  I can't get over the mental block of not having a real book.  I wouldn't get them for BM gifts.

Too expensive for a gift and to be honest, kind of a weird bridal party gift.  B-day  gift, fine. X-mas gift, fine.  

Also I LOVE LOVE LOVE to read but nothing beats curling up with a REAL book.  Maybe something that is more than e-reader where it acts like a laptop as well, but that would be super pricey and again, a weird bp gift.  I am not planning to spend anywhere near $70 for my girls.  I just can't afford it.  But if I could, I wouldn't get them a kindle.  Nice thought though.

I spent $700 total for my 5 BM. My FI hasn't bought his gifts yet for his GM but it will probably be around the same. I don't think the price is really an issue if you're okay with that. Have your friends ever said they wanted a Kindle? I love to read and have a Kindle but I prefer books over it any day. The only times I read from it is when I'm travelling on a plane and on vacation. I think if they've said they wanted one and/or travel often, it would be a great idea. If not, don't bother spending the money. All of my friends who love to read prefer an actual book over any e-reader.

I've had a Kindle for 3 years and I LOVE it, but I wholly agree with what mcskatcat is saying here.  It's a lot of money to spend on something that may not be wanted for one reason or another.  Plus, if I've read the description of the $79 kindles correctly, there are ads that pop up on the screen.  Personally, I wouldn't want an appliance that tries to sell me stuff.

Shop for each person like it's their birthday and perhaps include a wedding related item (ie: jewelry for the dress, ect).

Nobody would want the basic old Kindle... Kindle Fire is way better.

I definitely want to try out an e-reader, but I'm also a traditionalist... something about a book in hand. I'm going to play around with a few before I choose (think of it like any other technology... some people are iPhones and some are Blackberrys).

My mom was going to get me, my sister, and my brother's wife all Kindles for Christmas last year, but then she found out from my brother that her university (she's a professor) has strong ties to B&N on campus and they get all sorts of benefits.She ended up getting her a Nook, and my sister and I Kindles. If they are even interested in e-readers, the Kindle and the Nook are pretty different and I can see how a person might want one over another. I like the Kindle because I order from Amazon a lot and have a Prime membership.
