Registry question

I believe my fiancee and I have decided on where we are registering.  Two stores, and then putting everything on a Amazon's universal registry with a few select things from their website that you can't find in stores.  (The Amazon registry was suggested by family members that are big in to Amazon and would rather purchase an item from home while in their PJs and not having to haul the kids out.)  But my question is, do you duplicate items on the registries?  I really want a Kittchenaid stand mixer... do I register for it at BBB and Target or just stick with registering for it at one store?

Re: Registry question

  • The consensus around here is to only have things at 1 store, for fear that:
    a) You'll get a duplicate at your shower
    b) You'll get a duplicate privately, but guests will talk to each other and find out they  gave duplicates.
The point of a registry is to avoid duplicates.

I'm not taking the standard advice for now, though. Partly because my registry is practically private right now; only my Mom and my fiance and I know. Partly because the duplicates are cookware, which I've never heard people talk about so precisely as to identify a complete duplicate in terms of brand, size, shape, and coating. And partly because I stalk my registry weekly (mostly to add things that go on sale and remove things that get too expensive for me to be comfortable with). If I have a shower, I'll definitely remove the duplicates, though.
  • Only register for any given item at one store, or you will end up with duplicate gifts.

  • Register for it at one store. You don't want to risk getting two, and having to return one.
  • Are you saying you are going to put everything on your in-store registries on your Amazon universal registry?  I would not do that.
  • Why not? How the amazon universal registry works is you put everything on the amazon registry with this nifty amazon button you can install on your toolbar. Then when people click an item from your amazon registry, it brings you to the store's website where they can purchase the item and it still goes off that your purchasing it from a registry.
  • When you register at a store (I'm assuming you're registering at larger stores that have online shopping, say BBB), your registry will also be online at that store.  Why would I buy something by clicking on a link from Amazon to take me to BBB when I could buy directly from your BBB registry?  You're duplicating all of the items, and I do not think that purchasing through the Amazon universal registry link will mark an item on your BBB registry as fulfilled.

Also, by using Amazon to get to a BBB item, your address will not be listed as an option in the ship-to for the BBB item, and guests will have to enter it themselves.  We had a few guests email us to ask us our address so they could send us something from our Amazon universal registry.

Keep in mind that a lot of stores have completion discounts, whereas Amazon doesn't.  Some stores, like Macy's, give you points for the gifts that are purchased for you--you won't get that credit for things purchased through the Amazon universal registry.

We registered at BBB, Macy's, and Amazon (mostly stuff from Amazon, plus some other things, mainly from WS and REI on the universal registry)--I'm happy to share more about our experience if that is helpful.  I also highly recommend not duplicating things on your Amazon registry that are sold by Amazon--Amazon returns are a PITA (you pay shipping unless it's defective, and you have to get permission to return outside their relatively short return window).
  • The Kitchen-Aid is probably a better price and a higher quality (different model #, stronger motor) on Amazon.  I wouldn't duplicate with items where there's a clear value / quality difference because you probably want a certain one.

After a brief amt. of research, I registered for this one:

I love Amazon and buy practically everything there.  When we were comparing items online (Amazon vs BBB vs Macy's), Amazon almost always had the best price.  It hate registering for an item at BBB when I know one of our guests can get it cheaper at Amazon.  But here are my thoughts...

    - Not everyone shops online.  Some people are very anti online shopping.  Also, some people may not even know how to use the internet (my FMIL would have NO CLUE how to order something online if she had to).

    - If I am shopping for someone's registry and I see an item I want to buy for $100, but I can buy it elsewhere for $75, I will buy it elsewhere.  Then, I will call the store where the registry is and ask them to remove said gift since I already purchased it.

ETA: That being said, we registered at BBB, Macy's, and Amazon.  The bulk of registry is at BBB because that is what will be most convenient for all of our guests.  Items not available at BBB were put on our Macy's or Amazon registry.

  • I wouldn't duplicate items, but you might want to register at a physical store since there may be some people who don't do the internet.  I know I have older people in my family who don't do internet and then some people who will go on the internet but don't trust it to buy anything that way.

I agree with everything you said except the bolded. Amazon returns have always been easy for me and if I had a problem I just called and the people have always been really helpful.

OP you are running the risk of duplicating a ton of things and getting to do a ton of returns. Personally I hate returns it is a waste of time and enegry. Register for items one time.  We are registered at Macy's and Amazon: Macy's is mostly just dishes  Amazon is everything else.

  • sparent--I am just spoiled by Zappos-type return policies (free return shipping, 365 days to return).  We got two copies of one of the cookbooks on our Amazon registry, and we decided just to regift instead of having the return shipping deducted from our credit.
  • The kitchen aid is cheapest at Amazon! We registered for that on Amazon, but I think my mom is going to get it for us. :)
