Gift Card on Registry?

My FI and I are slowly adding items to our Target registry online. I was considering adding an Itunes gift card because we are looking to purchase more music for the home, car, ipod, office, etc. and we have relatively similar tastes in music. Would it be completely rude to add this to our registry? I can see on one hand it is a gift card so it is kind of like asking for cash, but at the same time it is a very specific gift card? FWIW I have a lot of "traditional" registry items included as well, I was just wondering if this is an acceptable nontraditional item to add. Thoughts?

Re: Gift Card on Registry?

  • I don't think this is appropriate.  It is still asking for cash.  Just use some of the money you will inevitably get as a gift to buy any music you want.

  • It's not appropriate. Like PP said, just use cash you receive from your wedding if you really want the music.

  • I agree with PPs.  The only real exception to the gift card rule that I see is when stores put that link to buy gift cards at the bottom of your registry, when it's clear that it's from the store.  I think some retailers let you check a box to make it appear and others do it automatically.  That doesn't bother me because there's an implication that you'll use any gift cards to complete that specific registry.  That said, even this form of listing gift cards bends the rules to the point of breaking them, and I think an iTunes gift card definitely breaks them.

Whoa, that's exactly what I was going to day! A gift card is a gift card. How is a specific gift card unlike any other gift card?

  • OP, How is it being a "very specific" gift card make it any different than any other gift card? GC of any kind = asking for cash which is rude.

[QUOTE]To clarify my comment about the gift card being "specific" - the giver would know exactly what we were using the gift card for, but if we had a target gift card on the registry (which we do not),we could use it to complete the registry...or to purchase groceries. Thanks for the advice, I will not include on the registry.

You mean an item GC (iTunes) as opposed to a store GC (Target)? Yeah, my answer remains. A gift card is a gift card. Skip it and use any money you get towards buying music.

  • Just use the money you get from the wedding gifts.  To me new music doesn't sound like something that I would want to buy someone for their wedding.

    This.

We had GCs to our registry store on our registry, but that's because it's the default -- you can't change it.  It's there as an option for people who don't see anything on the registry they want to buy or if the registry ran out.
