Unwanted gifts, complicated by tradition

We celebrated our wedding on the weekend, and the whole thing went off well.  The only issue I have is with my mother in law.  My husband's family has a tradition that the groom's family buys china and crystal for the couple and uses it to set the head table at the wedding.  I've never liked this tradition because I'm terrified of something happening to the delicate china and crystal, and I told my MIL that several times over the course of the wedding planning.  Needless to say, she ignored me and went ahead with it.  The second problem is that the stores were all out of the china and crystal patterns that I registered for, and they couldn't get it in on time for the wedding.  So my MIL bought 12 places settings of china and crystal that I didn't register for and that I don't even like. Of course, it was all set on the head table at the wedding and got used, so I can't even return it.

I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth - they spent a few thousand dollars on all those settings and it's a terribly generous gift - but it's all in a pattern that I hate and that I can't take back!  What can I do?  Should I sell it second-hand and try to get the pattern that I like? Or should I just suck it up and live with it?
