How small is "small"?

I've seen here over and over again that people should create a "small" registry if they don't really want a lot of stuff.

So I'm curious. How small is small? If we have 100 guests, is 50 items small? 25? Or is it more about money, like for 1000 guests our registry items only add to $500?

We invited 160 guests.  Our registry was 20 items.  That's small.  We mostly got cash.
