how many places should we register?

my fiance and i are facing a problem with registering. he want's to register at ONLY one place and i say we need to register at AT LEAST two or preferably 3 in my head.. am i totally off my bonkers thinking three? we'll have about 150-200 guests and i want to make sure we have enough to register for. also he doesn't want to register at any "expensive" stores because he comes from a very poor family. he thinks target is pushing the limit for the family... what do i do? how many

Re: how many places should we register?

  • What is his reason for only registering at one place? If you register for things at every price point, there should not be a problem. Honestly, Bed Bath and Beyond is probably the cheapest place since they send 20% off coupons all the time and have all of the $5-$10 gadgets to register for. As long as you don't limit your registries to Williams and Sonoma and Bloomingdale's, you won't turn off guests.

  • registering anywhere between 2 and 3 stores is fine as long as 1. all guests have access to that store (online or in person) and 2. You register for multiple items and multiple price points.

  • For the amount of guests attending your wedding you definitely need at least 2 registries, a 3rd would be great too. We registered at 3 places, at first we felt it was too much, but the girls on here always say that 2 or 3 is the norm.
  • I just registered and C&B and about half my items are under $20. Seriously.

If it is a place that most of your guests know of, then 1 is fine. FI is concerned that there might not be a C&B where some of his aunts and uncles live, so we're doing a smaller registry (linens and a few kitchen items) at BB&B.

The rule I've seen is 0-3 places.

  • You can always register on an online website that lets you add stuff from anywhere. I'm using myregistry.com to do this and I have stuff on my registry from about 5 different stores. This might also help you find the best prices for things you want too.
  • Someitmes, there are items you'd love to registar for that aren't avaliable at others; that really nice camera that you'd love for honeymoon pictures might be avaiblabe at Best Buy but not Kohl's.

Registering at more than one place is actually quiet common, but I wuldn't register more than three places, and of course register at places that almost everyone has access to.

  • I know this totally contradicts what most people have said, but I would recommend only one. I work for a major retailer, and I actually head up the bridal and gift registry program. I won't tell you which one, because I'm not here to promote. But, I not only monitor my registries, but registries at other stores as well. People who register at one place get more stuff, and people spend more money. Period. It's easy to start scanning different items at different stores, you find more than one bedding pattern that you like, so you decide you'll see which one you can get, and it can confuse your guests. If you're registered at one place, it's very clear and concise what you want. You just need to make sure your registry is big enough for everyone. Most retailers really do carry almost the exact same things, so a lot of times, there's really no NEED to register at more than one store.
  • Fi only wanted to register at one store. So, we went into Macy's together with our list we pre made and registered for as much as we could in store. Then I went home filled in the gaps at Macys and then went to Target online and got a variety of price posts and some more casual items, camping gear and such. Fi is not much of a shopper so I think this worked really well for us. HTH

  • I think everyone I know registered at more than one place. It is so hard to find everything you want in just one store so why settle?? I wouldn't register for just anything at both places. I am mainly registered at Bed Bath and Beyond but I did not like the bedding and towels so I registered at Macys. I ended up adding a few pieced of china that BBB does not carry and a few other things.

It also gives people the chance to have a choice. I am a BBB shopper all the way. Love the 20% coupons but someone called my fiance and asked him to take something off our registry at BBB because they bought it at Macys.
  • I have to disagree that you can find everything you need at just one store.  The "proper" place around here is BB&B which of course has every cool gadget known to man but we also just registered at Target.  It's cheaper (yes, it IS!) and there is a larger variety, like we wanted a power screwdriver, patio chairs and a grill and BB&B doesn't sell those (here anyway).  I felt selfish for registering at 2 places until I came on here and saw it's more common than I thought.
