Returning gifts At bed bath beyond?

If you return a gift at bed bath and beyond from your registry does the gift goer know? Does a fulfilled gift 1/1 change to 0/1. Does it stay fulfilled? I am looking to exchange gifts without hurting anyone's feelings?

    Thank you. It was an item that was not in the store. I ordered the item based on reviews and store recommendation. After receiving the item it was not what I expected.
