When to Register? Is it too Soon?

We are getting ready to send out our save the dates.  Our wedding website will be on the cards, and we were planning on listing our registry information on our website once we have registered.

Is it too soon to register?  How soon would people start shopping for a wedding gift?

Our wedding is 04/30/11.

Re: When to Register? Is it too Soon?

  • I don't think it's ever too soon.  You never know when people will buy you a present.

I would start off by registering for essentials - like small kitchen appliances, things you NEED.  Then a few months down the road choose things that involve tastes - like bedding, china patterns, flatware, etc.  Your tastes will change and these are the items most likely to be discontinued in the next six months or so.

Whatever you do, just keep an eye on it.  I check about once a week to make sure all of our items are still available, and we added more right after our showers.
  • Nope, it isn't too early, however there isn't a rush either.  IF you and FI want to register now that is perfectly acceptable.  Even if you don't know everything you might want or need you can get a registry started and add to it as the wedding day approaches.

  • Usually 6 months out is a good time to register so you're ok to do it now.  Just be weary of adding seasonal items since many people might not look at your registry until closer to your showers.

  • I think it kind of depends on where you are registering.  We registered at Target, Kohl's, and Macy's and only registered 4 months before the wedding.  We weren't having any showers until the month before the wedding, and, in my region, people very rarely purchase gifts very far in advance of the shower.

Also, we noticed with other couples that registered 6 months or more in advance that many of the items they picked out ended up being sold out or discontinued.  I don't know if that's the norm, but we even ended up having to pick out new dishes at Target because the ones we originally sold were no longer available.  Just some things to keep in mind!

  • I don't think it's too early to register.  Your family may want to use it to buy Christmas presents for you.
  • I have always heard that once you get engaged, people start thinking of what they want to get for your wedding.  We just got engaged on 9/24 and within 2 weeks we had established gift registries at Bed Bath and Beyond as well as Sears (for "man stuff").

If you have time, and you and your fiancee can go together, it is an incredible bonding experience... picking the items that will hopefully later furnish your house.  I recommend it, as soon as you feel like you have about 2 hours to spare for your chosen store.

  • We just started our Macy's registry yesterday, and we're not getting married for about two years!

I do agree that you'll have to keep an eye on it to make sure things are still available, but our families want to buy us things from our registries for holidays and birthdays, and this way they have plenty of time to watch for sales on the big stuff like kitchen appliances.

And great idea with Sears Kelly! I didn't even think of that and now I'm even more torn in what stores to register with besides Macy's!

This is what I did! I got married in June, but created my registries last fall so my family could do Christmas shopping from them. Just keep watching it and update it as items become unavailable.

  • We started our registries very early- over a year out.  My job is very cyclical, so I am busy half the year and not very busy the other half.  We had to register early before my busy season started.

If I had the choice, I would have waited, honestly.  We've run into issues with items and patterns being discontinued.  When we made our registry, we registered for our china at Bed, Bath and Beyond; the store stopped carrying our china pattern 2 months ago.  We had similar problems with colors and items being discontinued at Williams Sonoma (especially in the Le Creuset line).  We wound up having to make another Amazon.com registry to fill in gaps left by discontinued items.

Just something to consider.  Stores change stock all the time.
  • we regestered, but i also think its great as for our familys want to get us stuff for christmas or birthdays and they already know where we are registered lol
