Early Registering?

Hi ladies!

FI and I were engaged in December and are planning a summer or October 2012 wedding.

I did not think about registering at all until his mother said that people have been asking her where we are registered.  She is throwing an engagement party for us in June and she just sent the invitations out.  FI also told me that when he saw a lot of his relatives and family friends this weekend they were all asking where we are registered.  I guess that engagement parties are gift-giving events in his family's circle.  My family is a lot smaller than his and we do not do e-parties or showers and we really don't purchase gifts except for on the wedding day, so this is all new to me.

I feel like it is early to register, but also grateful and appreciate that people are interested in purchasing gifts for us.  Yesterday, FI and I started to set one up at BB&B and I just started one onlin with Macy's.

Here is my concern:  I'm worried that certain things will get discontinued between now and our wedding (ex., china patterns, bedding collections, etc.).

How many things do you think I should put on it now?  Will it look weird if we do our whole registry now?  We find ourselves making decisions about everything at once (ex., When we pick cookware, we end up thinking about what we want our theme to be and pick dish towels, etc.).

Any advice you have would be helpful.  Thanks ladies!

  • I agree with you - I think it's too early. If you suspect that fiancé's family gives registry presents for the engagement party, then it might be good to pick one place, and just pick out a few classic, won't-be-discontinued items like simple frames, crystal, or a non-trendy china pattern - many of the established brands like Lenox have patterns they've been producing for decades that aren't going away any time soon.

Other than that, I'd wait until later to do the whole shebang.

  • I would make a small registry with a few classic items as PP said.  I didn't have an engagement party, but we got a few gifts that were fairly classic items--silver salad bowl, cake serving set, etc.  I would add  frames, vases, cake cutting set, toasting flutes, and more celebratory items than practical items.

If you need more items, go ahead an add a china pattern.  I would look for a more timeless, less trendy pattern anyway--you want to be able to get replacements and add to your set for years to come.

    Definately second PP.

Things that we had a problem with were bedding items, so I would add those later... and you'll be surprised at what might me considered seasonal
  • Thanks for all the advice!  I think I'm going to follow your advice and pick more decorative items rather than a lot of practical.  I think I'll keep a few practical things like casserole dishes on there in case someone wants to give that kind of gift.  As a guest, I know I always like it when people give me a lot of options!

  • I registered pretty early (8 months before the wedding).  Very few items were discontinued.

I think if you register for classics like dishes, glassware, small electrics, non-seasonal bedding, you'll probably be fine.  I think items on the decor side might be more likely to get discontinued.

  • i registered 13 mths out. really how hard is it to hit delete and replace the couple of items that are out of stock? honestly, it was a big help. christmas and birthday lists are taken care of. we already recieved a lot of gifts stored away for after the wedding.

pp is right. really the only things ive had to change this week were the couple of decor things which weren't really a big deal anyway.

    Anniversary

It only really is an issue when you have 2 out of 12 place settings in a pattern that is discontinued and you can't return because the store isn't selling them...
  • what about small essential items?  things that aren't a pattern or part of a set?  You could put your cookie sheets, whisks, egg timer, tea towels, hangers, etc...

I like the "celebratory items" comment, too.  That's good thinking!
  • Since your are getting married in October and your engagement party is in June, you could register for seasonal things that aren't as readily available in the fall, like bbq accessories. My engagement party was in December, so i registered for a few Christmas items, but just recently really registered for household things
