Re-Gifting Vent

This past weekend FI's family and church threw us a small party to celebrate our engagement and upcoming wedding since we're having a small friends and family wedding in my hometown and couldn't invite his entire church congregation.  The invitations made no mention of gifts, but of course a few people brought gifts.

After the party, FI and I went home and opened our gifts.  We got several very nice gifts from our registry.  However, one of our gifts, while nice, was obviously regifted.  There was a card inside the box and it was addressed to Amy and Richard, obviously not FI and I.  Turns out, the gift was from an older couple.  Amy and Richard?  Their granddaughter and now grandson-in-law who were married two years ago.  The card inside was from the a cousin of the couple (who happened to be at our party as well).  And some of the stuff had already been taken out of its packaging when we looked inside.

Needless to say, we were shocked.  Of course, we aren't going to say anything to the gift givers and we're going to send a card thanking them.  However, are we wrong to be a little bothered by this?  I know a gift is a gift and you should always be grateful, and we are, but we couldn't believe these people re-gifted and didn't even make sure it wasn't WAY obvious!

I guess it could be worse and I guess it will make a good story in the future!  Anyone else have any weird re-gifting stories?

Re: Re-Gifting Vent

  • The least they could do was make sure the gift was packaged well (you know, without the original gift givers card!) before they wrapped it themselves.

  • That's... whoo. Special. That's special. You're right, just send them a gracious thank you note and drop it.

What was the gift? I'm curious.
  • I'm also curious as to what it was. I had a birthday party a few years ago that my friend insisted on throwing me. Then she gave me a gift which I didn't expect since she paid for the whole party. It was a bracelet with her initial. She said because I'm her BFF. Later on, I overheard her and friend2 arguing because friend2 had originally given the bracelet to friend1. She recognized it the second I opened it. I didn't mention it, but I mean, really awkward.

  • It was the KitchenAid Utensils and Gadgets 17 Piece Set.  We have a utensil set on our registry (though, not this one), so we were quite excited when we saw the box!  But to open it and find a card not to you and also not from the gift givers was quite a shock!  Now I'm wondering how they got ahold of the gift in the first place!
  • Maybe it was a two-time regift?  Seriously not the way to go about regifting.
  • So it's not quite a re-gifting story so much as a re-gifted bag story.

A few years ago, my Aunt and Uncle gave my grandmother a Christmas present in a gift bag. When my grandmother took out the tissue paper, a card fell out, addressed to my aunt and uncle's neighbor, with a gift card inside. Somehow, over the course of 3 Christmases, someone gave the other couple a gift card that got lost in this bag, which was used to wrap a present for my aunt and uncle the next year, who also didn't notice the card, which was used to wrap my grandmother's present the year after that, and they didn't notice it when they wrapped it either!

And because the story was so crazy, the restaurant honored the gift card even though it was very expired.

  • Oh, absolutely!  I only hope that the original gift receivers don't go looking for it and wonder where their utensils are!  Though, I never thought that it might be a DOUBLE re-gift!  Sheesh!

If it makes it any better, we also got a piece of Tupperware as a gift that might possibly have been used before.  We're not sure, but it does have some residue inside that leads us to believe that someone gave us something from their cabinet!  LOL!  Oh, well.  Thought that counts, right?

  • Hahaha!  Like I said, we aren't sure!  All we know is that it isn't a current piece and it had some residue and a bit of smell to it!  But I guess it could have been from something at the warehouse or whatever!
  • One time I was shopping in Bed Bath and Beyond and opened a box to get a better look at a jewelry tree.  Inside the box was a card, obvously from a "friend" to a newlywed couple, saying she was sorry she missed the wedding, a $50 BBB gift card and a pretty necklace.  The couple had clearly returned the gift without even opening the box!

Please tell me you bought that jewelry tree with the necklace and gift card still inside!  It's horrible for the original couple, but would be a great find for you! :)
