In a Registering Funk...

I created two registries, one at Target and one at Macy's.  The target one has one item and Macy's probably about ten.  I keep saying I have to go in and register for more things but I either don't have time or I just don't like or need anything else.  We have lived together for 6 years, lived in our condo and late last year purchased our home.  So we have a lot of stuff already.

How small is too small?  I don't want people to think wrong that its so small, but in reality there isn't much we need.  We want to do some home improvements but even that is just a few things.

Well, how many guests are you inviting? That would help to know. But yes, I do think that is way too small. With only 11 items, you might as well not register at all. People will get the hint that you dont need anything.

We are inviting 75 people.  I am trying to update the linens, towels and even curtains more than anything.

So if I have 75 guests.  You think I should go to at least that many in items too?

Do you know if you're having a bridal shower? If you've having a shower, 75 items would probably be okay, based on the size of your wedding. If you're not having a bridal shower and still want to have a registry, I'd probably put at least 20 items on it so that people who really want to give you a boxed gift have some options to choose from in a variety of price ranges.

    ETA: clarity.

Yes, I am having a bridal shower so I think what you said is a good idea.  I'll add more things this weekend.  I'm sure FI wouldn't mind adding a few things.

[QUOTE]If Target only has one items, I'd nix that whole registry. Surely you can find more stuff to register for. What is your favorite room in the house? Ours is the kitchen, so we got tons of fun kitchen stuff, and upgraded the things we already had. New cookware and knives, bread machine, ice cream maker, slow cooker, new bakeware, etc. Any of those sound good to you? You can also just add stuff online if you don't want to go to the store. We added most of the stuff online because it let us read reviews and avoid the annoying sales people.

Good idea! I wouldn't mind new knives and bakeware.  Most of the other stuff I have are fairly new.  I love to cook so I'll probably take a look at the kitchen department.  Also, FI has a downstairs which is fairly plain except for the couch, TV and pool table.

The general rule is to have twice as many items as you have shower guests (or guests that will be buying from it if you aren't having a shower).

If you are going to have such a small registry, I'd nix a registry all together. It's not required.

[QUOTE]What about non-house stuff? Board games, camping gear, other stuff you two like to do together? Grandma might not buy a gift like that, but I totally would.

Oh that's good! We started camping last year and want to continue with our little one.  Good idea!

Yes all that stuff is fine for a registry. Also remember to have a variety of different prices as well. People will not buy from a registry if everything is super expensive.

I think actually going into the stores and picking things out will help considerably - at least it would for me. I'm a visual shopper and usually prefer to see what things look like in person. For some kitchen things it especially helpful to see how heavy they are. Go to your Target and Macy's and walk around with the scanner gun. I'm sure you'll find a lot more things that you would like.

FI actually told me that would be a better idea and I dismissed it because lately my time is so limited.  I think this is going to be my plan this weekend.  I'm not leaving the store until the registry is better than it is now! <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />

I feel you - we're doing it piecemeal. Now I'm having more than one shower (which is awesome and sweet, but adding more registry pressure), so I really need to spend some time looking for new bedding and dishes.
    It's a good problem to have :)

Retread is right - the summer stock is incredible, and it will all go on sale around labor day.  I am weird and purposefully scheduled our wedding so it would fall around really good sales (ours is the week after Easter, and Macy's end-of-quarter sale is happening this weekend).  If we didn't have 1000 schedulig conflicts during the summer and early fall we would have arranged it around labor day because the summer stock is great - think BBQ, yard games, outdoor dining and serving pieces, inexpensive patio furniture, lamps, candles, new cushions for outdoor furniture, etc.
