We're moving right after the wedding -- what do we do for the gifts?

My fiance and I are getting married and honeymooning in California, where we live now. But as soon as we get back from the honeymoon we're moving to Colorado. We don't know what to do with the gifts!

We could ask everyone to ship their gifts to my fiance's parents house (who live in the area we are moving to.) -- But Is that rude?

I've also heard legends of stores that let your guests buy things in store or online but not actually get the gifts -- you pick them up later. If our guests could buy the gifs anywhere and we pick them up in Colorado, that would be amazing.

Or are there any other good options for just moving couples?

  • Does your family live in California? Any gifts brought to the reception I would have a trusted relative keep at their house until after the honeymoon and then just pack them up and move them with the rest of your belongings.

I don't think there is anything wrong with asking people who plan on shipping gifts to send them to your fiance's parents house but I'm not sure how you would go about doing this other than word of mouth.
  • If you make a registry there is nothing wrong with having the ship to address to CO so they have the option. You can not however ask your guests to ship their gifts there instead of bringing them to the wedding.  It's the bride and groom's responsibility to ship their own gifts.

  • Most Big Box stores will let you set up the shipping address of your choice, so anyone who chooses to buy online will have the option of shipping to this address.   Some stores don't show the buyer what the address IS, it just has the option of "Ship to the address entered by the Bride and Groom."

Some people may give you gifts in person, and you will be responsible for moving those.

You can, however, let people know by word of mouth that you are about to move to Colorado (maybe if you have an "about us" section of your website), and you can register for easy-to-pack items like sheets and towels.   Also, a new blender is just as easy to move as an old blender, so you might think about registering for replacements or upgrades to your older items (then you can donate your old items to a charity thrift store).
