Fine China

For all of those who are married...is a 5 piece plate setting enough for fine china or should you register for more than that?

We registered for 15, but we regularly host parties of 10-12. Even if you don't think you will use them often, I would register for at least 8 settings. Items can get broken, discontinued, etc., so it's better to be safe than sorry in this situation.

  • I agree with Twilight.  There was also a post from a married knottie about how her china has been discontinued and it's very difficult for her to find anymore matching sets.

  • Is the question is a 5-piece setting enough (i.e. do you a dessert plate, a mug, etc.) or do you need more than 5 place settings?
  • If you're asking if a 5 piece place setting is enough, I would say no. I would register for atleast 1 vegtable bowl and 1 serving platter. If the question is are 5 setting enough, I would say no again. You need atleast 12 to host a moderate sized family dinner.

  • Thank you! yes I was wondering how much everyone is registering for/is 5 enough for a set....so just register for 2 or 3 of the same set?

  • To start, I think most people register for about 12 of the 5-piece place settings
On top of that, a lot of people add serving pieces as well, such as a vegetable bowl (or 2), a platter, maybe a gravy boat and a sugar/creamer set.  Depends on how much of that stuff you want.

  • I would recommend at least 8 or up to 12 of the 5pps, and as far as serving pieces, if there is a matching salt/pepper, I'd recommend that.  Also, you'll want a serving platter (either rectangular or oval depending on the brand), 2 vegetable bowls, a gravy boat, maybe a coffee or tea pot, and if there are any other serving pieces that you could see yourself using, put those down.  If you don't get them as gifts, you can always use the completion discount to get them, or wait and get them on Ebay or www.Replacements.com, or even Amazon.  Also don't doubt Craigs List ... some great finds on there too!

A 5 piece place setting is 5 PIECES... one dinner plate, one salad plate, one bread and butter plate, one cup and one saucer. You still need 8-12 of them, NOT just 2 or 3.

  • OP, dishes are generally sold by each individual piece, by the place setting (as mary described), or by the set (in which case it will say 20 pieces for service for 4, or whatever it includes).  A 5-piece place setting is enough for 1 person.
  • ooo ok i completely misunderstood it on the website thank you!

We made the same mistake when we were registering for everyday dishes at BBB.  We ended up not registering for the dishes, because we realized we didn't like them all that much (when the BBB employee told us we actually needed a lot more, we were like, "really, for these?"), but just wanted to say you aren't the only one!
