Now what?

My wonderful FH and I got engaged three weeks ago.  We're still working out venues and stuff (we want to get married a year from September) and haven't registered yet because the wedding is over a year away.

We've already gotten several gifts.  My neighbor bought me a few glasses (it was an inside joke), FH's aunt got us a photo album for our vacation pictures (we got engaged on vacation), and his grandmother got us a blender.  Not expecting that, but so sweet of them.  Next, my aunt and grandmother went out and got us silverware.  Here's my question.

We haven't registered yet but we were going to pick out silverware together.  We're just starting out (both still living with our parents right now a year out from graduating college) so we need things like that.  The pattern that they picked out to give us was ugly.  I can't imagine using it every day.  My aunt told me that we could exchange it for another pattern if we wanted, but let me know that the set of 12 came from the Christmas Tree shop and she had a horrible time finding the full set (they come in packs of four so they had to buy three boxes to make the full set).

It seems like I have a few options.  I can keep the set which won't go with anything else.  Pros is that my grandmother and aunt picked it out (knowing also that it wasn't their first choice but insetad the only one of 12 they could find).  Cons is that it's really one of the last things I would have picked.  I could exchange it.  Pros is that I might be able to find something I like better.  Cons is that I might not be able to find it because now I'm limited to a discount store that doesn't carry the same stock from store to store.  Last option that I can see is that I return it and shell out money somewhere else for a new set and nobody needs to know.  Pros is that I get what my FH and I want (and goes with our style and taste).  Cons is that I might have to spend a lot more money getting something I want.

Thoughts?

OK way too many pros and cons for one post.  I would take them back, get store credit, and then register for the pattern you want when the time comes.  If you two aren't graduated and living together yet, you won't need flatware ("silverware" is made of actual silver - flatware is everything else) for another year.  If it's not going to offend them for you to select something else, that's the route I would go.  If you need something to hold you over for a couple of months between graduation and the wedding, I would maybe return two of the boxes and keep one to use over the summer.

If you think it would offend them to see flatware on your registry, then don't register for it and buy it with cash you receive at the wedding as a gift to yourself.  It's nice to tell cash-givers what you are planning on buying with their gift, and I'm certain most guests would be pleased to know that you were able to purchase flatware with it.  Williams Sonoma, Pottery Barn, and Crate and Barrel all give you the registry completion discount (10% off) after your wedding for the entire store, not just for items you registered for.  So if you find a pattern you like at one of those places you can buy it quietly after the wedding and still get the discount.

FWIW, this happened to me with crystal - I got 36 pieces from a family friend, and while I do like it it is not what I would have picked out.  WS carries the pattern FI and I would have picked, and so we may buy a few pieces to start our preferred collection with leftover gift cards and wedding money.  Eventually we will probably sell most of the other set (though I'll keep a few pieces for sentimental reasons) to replacements.com but not while that couple may still be coming over to visit... unlike your grandmother and aunt they have every expectation that I will keep it for the rest of my life.

  • I agree completely with hoffse, but I have one thing to add. Do you entertain a lot? Or do you plan to? If so, I would hold on to the "extra" flatware and only break it out for buffet-style or hor d'oeuvre parties or to use instead of plasticware. We hate using plastic, and when we have people over we never seem to have enough flatware.
  • Also, the Christmas Tree Shops is typically pretty poor quality all around. I LOVE going there for cheapie things but I would never want something for long-term use. The chances of that silverware holding up are very slim. Whatever you do, I would register for some nicer silverware. BBB has some great, affordable options.
  • Awesome!  Thanks for the advice!  I think I will return it and use some of the money we've gotten already to purchase a new set.  They'll never need to know.  I never even thought of using some of the money we'd gotten...

<div>Just be certain that if, heaven forbid, the wedding doesn't happen you have enough in your account to return any cash gifts you have received.  You're really not supposed to spend it until after the wedding, but the consensus is that you can if you are able to give it back in the case of something awful.</div>

Hoffse, what pattern did you receive?  What pattern do you prefer?  I am trying to decide on a crystal pattern.  Actually, I am trying to decide if I want a traditional pattern, a more modern pattern, or just go with Riedel.

<div>I have Gorham King Arthur - it's a nice, very heavy set of crystal (they don't make it anymore but replacements.com sells it still).  My only issue with it is that the cutting is deeper/heavier than my preference, and it looks sort of funky with my china pattern which is rather simple (Lenox Pearl Platinum).  I really love waterford lismore essence... of course, it's $80/stem so it will be a looooong time until we complete that (if ever!)  I also love Vera Wang Duchesse and Wedgwood Knightsbridge.</div><div>
</div><div>As far as modern patterns go, I'm a huge fan of Kate Spade Percival Place - it's pretty simple but I think it works well with a lot of more contemporary dinnerware patterns.  </div><div>
</div><div>If I were you, I'd register for both everyday wine glasses (Riedel) and then your formal pattern.  But look at it next to your china pattern, if you have one, because they really do look different when it's all put together.  I made the mistake of accepting those gorham glasses when they were offered to me (though to be fair I didn't feel like I had a huge choice), and I didn't have a china pattern picked yet.  They're not bad on their own but it's a weird effect overall.</div>

</div><div>I have flatware from the Christmas Tree shop that I got for everyday use.  I'm not in love with it, but I do love having 12 of everything and the fact that it matches, so it is working for now.  I did register for some that is Lenox at BBB that is much prettier and I love it, but it will be quite some time before I have it all!</div><div>
</div><div>So if you need flatware now, use it and keep it as a spare set (I cannot tell you how often we need extras for parties and we don't want to use plastic!).

<div>Haha really?  In all of my friends that I've registry stalked, I've never seen anybody else with this same pattern!  I really really love it :)</div>

  • I would return it!  You live at home and don't need it now, plus grandma/aunt even said it wasn't there first choice!

Perhaps you should start a small registry now so people don't get you anymore random engagement gifts?  We registered 1 year out, which is early for sure (yay September brides!).  We had a couple items get discontinuned, but it's not that much of a hassel and you can generally find things that are almost the same.  The items that were discontinued were our All Clad cookware (they got rid of their cheapest line, so we upgraded to the nicer stuff, which is now the "cheapest" stuff they sell) and a tiered cupcake/serving tree/platter thing.  No big deal :D

  • Responding super late to this thread. Hoffse, we clearly have similar tastes! One of my best friends has Duchesse, and I love it. Obviously, Lismore Essence is similar, so out of the Waterford patterns, it's my favorite. It's just hard to imagine spending that much on crystal. Especially considering how clumsy I am. That being said, my china pattern is Haviland Orsay, and I registered for Bernardaud Constance salad plates. Pretty sedate, and simple, so the minimalist patterns would look good with them. On the other hand, I'm inheriting Wallace Grande Baroque, which is pretty ornate. Never thought I'd be thinking so much about china, sterling, and crystal. I've always set a very casual, mismatched table!
