When to open gift/ send thank you?

I received a wrapped gift from one of the places I registered.  It is gift wrapped and my shower is in 2 weeks.  Should I wait to open it at the shower and send thank you note after that or open now?  I can see on the packing slip who it is from.  What would you ladies do?

Is the person attending the shower?

I'd probably just save it for the shower. I like going to showers to see the gifts people give though, so that's just IMO.

Do you know whether it's intended for the shower?  Is it somebody you are comfortable asking their preference?

No she most likely won't attend the shower as she is out of town in a different state.  My first thought is to wait until the shower but I wasn't sure what everyone else thought.

I would wait til the shower -- if she got a shower invite then she knows when it is and knows when to expect the thank you note! That's what I would do.

If you do wait for the shower, I might go ahead and let her know that you recieved the gift.  One of the most imporant functions of a thank you note is to let the sender know that their gift arrived.  Since it is sent through the mail, she may be worried about it arriving safely.

Ditto Retread.  If it was sent to your house then the person isn't attending and you should thank her right away.
