Does this happen to other brides?

I just had a great bridal shower today, great turn out, food, games, and even gifts. My FI and I registered at Kohls and BB&B, our registery was very diverse in price ranges as well. I had been stalking our registeries the last week or so and noticed that for as many people were coming that not a lot of gifts were being purchased. So today at the shower, I opened 4 big skillets, 3 George Foreman grills, and 2 crock pots. Many of my FI's family bought from Wal Mart and even took off the barcodes so we can't return them. I am to say a bit frustrated because I'm not sure what I'm going to do with that much repeated stuff. It was so bad, I didn't even open my mom's gift because it was one of the 4 skillets, though she bought off the registry.

Has anybody else had this problem, and if so, what did you do with it all?

  • What pp said.
You might be able to get in-store credit.

  • Took off barcodes?? How crappy is that? WOW never seen that before. I understand some trying to find similar brands at the other stores ect but the barcode thing baffles me. Write out the TYs and try to get store credit, if not then regift or sell on Craigslist lol

  • I have 2 crock pots and love having multiples so I would also keep both or if they are identical - say both are round, see if you can exchange one for an oblong. I use my oblong crock pot for roasts, turkey breasts etc. I use the round one for soups and things like that. Sometimes I use them both at the same time (if we're entertaining).

It never hurts to have more than one really good skillet in the same size. If you don't use it right aware, store it. I would try to return/exchange the multiple grills and some of the skillets.
  • Wow, that sucks - this hasn't happened to me yet (my shower isn't till July), but it's definitely something I worry about! I agree with PPs, try to exchange the items for in-store credit if nothing else. I feel like if people are going to buy something not on the registry, they should give you the gift receipt...

Be grateful for all and any gifts you receive. Yes, it is a little frustrating that they didn't use your registry or make it more difficult for you to return them. But remember to keep a positive attitude and remember that it was very generous of them to give you a gift at all. A registry is just a suggestion, not a mandate.

So, as others said, try to return for store credit if you don't have a receipt. If you can't return the extras or duplicates, you can either keep them if they might be useful. Or you can always give them to friends/family who might be able to use them. Or worst case, either sell on craigslist or donate. Either way, try to think of a positive about it. If you pass it on to someone who can use it you are doing a good deed.

If your mom gave you one of the skillets, then return that one and keep the one that you can't return.

[QUOTE]I'm not sure what you mean when you say that they took off the barcodes. Do you just mean that they took off the wal-mart price sticker , or they cut the cardboard box, and removed the price tag? Because if it was the first, you shouldn't have any problem returning them. Personally, I would keep both crock pots. There are countless times when I use both of mine. Return some of the skillets & grills, and write very gracious thank you notes. It happens all the time...at one of my showers I received literally 26 pieces of Corningware. We had registered for 4. Not a big deal, I returned them all. Those duplicate gifts I was unable to return, I have either realized it's great to have duplicates of that particular item, or, will regift them to someone I know will love them. No big deal.

not if the barcode is removed.

and not really. this is not always true. i had gotten 4 crockpots (2 is fine...4 i dont have room or a need for) and walmart wouldnt take it back because it didnt come from there.
  • No gift receipts? Those are a lifesaver!

What PPs said - return/exchange what you can, keep some if you want, re-gift, or sell.

And always write a thank you note :)

  • I received a few items like this. I did learn that Walmart will not take anything over $20 without a receipt.

I would suggest hanging onto the items for a little bit to see if you might eventually use them. I got a bright red crock pot (red being my least favorite color in the world) and did end up busting it out for a Super Bowl party this year. Anything that I still haven't used by this summer will probably go in our garage sale or on Craiglist or something. I also have an extra steam mop that I'm giving my SIL. I would suggest waiting it out to see if you'll eventually use them or if you can give them to someone else who might appreciate them.
  • Ugh- I thought walmart was so good about stuff like this? But who removes barcodes? I see a big ole craigslit sale in your future. Luckily, I have been pretty lucky thus far!
