Moving soon after wedding?

My fiancee and I are moving into my mom's house when we get married, she is planning on moving out and we would take over the mortgage.  About a year or so after the wedding we are planning on looking for a house of our own so I'm worried about registering for home decor items.  I know there are somethings that you will always keep and love but I am worried about registering for things like bathroom accessories/towels and other things like wall hangings or other little knick kack things that go with the way our house currently is. I don't want to register for things that I won't be using after we move because the I won't know what our new house will be like. is there a way to work around this?

Re: Moving soon after wedding?

  • For linens, you can register in neutral colors that will blend in with any decor.  Or, just get the colors you like and would want to redecorate your new place in.  Most towels will just sit in a cabinet until you need them, and few people other than yourselves will see your sheets, right?

Things like curtains and window blinds are more difficult.  If you get gift cards, you can save those to spend when you're ready to buy those things.  Pillows can again be in neutral colors.  Or concentrate your registry on kitchen stuff, appliances, luggage, tableware, etc, that don't apply to decor, so you can save what money you do have for the stuff you'll need to buy later.

I just wouldn't register for those kinds of things at all if you don't think you'll use them for very long. It's okay to have a small(er) registry. FI & I are moving soon after our wedding as well so we just registered for things we know we'll absolutely need & use in our new home. We'll save the decor & details to purchase once we move in.
