You could have possibly gotten criticized for giving bad advice since no carbs is an unhealthy way to lose weight.  Also, telling your friends that you want $$$$ is pretty bad advice also.  Nobody on these boards goes out specifically to criticize anyone, but if you're giving bad advice they're going to let you know that.

Gifts do not have to be about "stuff".  As I mentioned before either give to charity or volunteer a day.  I volunteer all the time for probably 4-6 hours every month. Volunteering builds a better community and good for the soul - this is the best gift you can give on a budget. 

I would be touched for years if my friends came with me to help at the soup kitchen - even for only 2 hours.

I would just add additional, less expensive items to the registry, but in the event you can't, I'm assuming your friends will do something they can afford.

When things are out of my price range, I give cash for showers and such, but I always give cash at the actual wedding.
