Can I register just to get the completion discount?

I declined all showers since we are doing a DW.  Anyone that has asked us about gifts or what we wanted we simply state that we want nothing and that we just want them to be able to come to the wedding.

I really don't want anyone to buy us anything - I honestly feel weird about it (don't ask me why I just do).  Anyways there are a couple of things that I would like to have.  And I'm a sucker for good deals...And the completion discounts seem like a no-brainer.  Is it okay to regiester a couple of days before the wedding just so I can buy them myself after?

  • If you're going to register to get the completion discount, then I don't really see why you wouldn't let people know where you're registered if they'd like to get you a gift anyways.

But yes, you can register just to get the discount.  In the future, though, if someone asks where you're registered, just tell them where to, and don't lie because then if they find out you didn't let them know where you're registered it will probably make the whole situation even more uncomfortable.
  • You'll have to look at the store policy. Some will require that you have a certain # of items on your registry, that it be open for a certain amount of time and some might even require that items be purchased. If it's just a computer spitting out a completion discount coupon after your wedding, then there may not be a big issue. But if personnel have to give you the discount, they're going to be very suspicious of the fact that nothing is purchased.
  • Ditto PP.  That said, I'm registering at a couple of places and keeping it quiet for the completion discount.  For example: dillard's does a 20% off discount.  It's the best I've been able to find, but there's not a Dillard's near the majority of our guests.  My parents know about it and a few VIPs know about it, so we may get a few things off of it and if so great.  But it's basically a duplicate of the ones we will tell people about who ask and we will take things off of it as we get things from other places.  It's a bit more work for us, but the 20% off discount makes it worth it in my opinion.  That and I know FI is going to buy some fiesta for me as a housewarming gift, which we have registered for.  Dillard's has the best price, and he can buy it with cash, mark it as complete on our registry and then it's fully "active."

<div>I would be careful with that. If FI wants to buy it for you, but you hae it on a registry and some people know about it, then someone else might buy it for you. Which would be great but not if FI had his heart set on buying it for you. KWIM?</div>
  • It's going to be marked as completed.  We've talked about it.  If somebody else buys us some of the same stuff we'll exchange for a different color - yay fiesta in 10 colors!

  • That's what we did at Bloomingdale's.  After we were married, we went into Bloomie's to look at china and crystal--we had family members that told us they wanted to get these items as their gifts to us if we picked it out--the registry consultant urged us to make a registry to get the completion discount.  (We didn't pick everything out earlier because we were moving and didn't want to have to transport it, plus our old location did not have stores that stocked many china and crystal patterns.)
