Registry and Gift Forum

I've been getting pretty bad about stalking my registries lately.  Partially because my shower is on 5/19.  I just noticed today that there are two different things on my Kohls registry where people were it says I'm receiving 2 of somethings when I only asked for 1!  A few days ago the site said I was only receiving 1 one of each, so it's not like two people just so happened to buy the things simultaneously.

Obviously I will graciously accept any gift that someone gives me/us, but there are plenty of other things in those same price ranges for people to pick from?  Why would Kohl's allow people to order extras?  One of the things is a vase, so no big deal there, but the other thing is a canvas bible verse for hanging on the wall.  I don't understand why someone would think a second one would be useful?  Maybe they just really think we need a reminder that Love is patient, love is kind...?

Okay, rant over.  But, has this happened to other people?  I have seen other people saying that Kohl's deleted their items, but not this.  I'm partially worried that it will be akward at the shower to get 2 of the bible verse canvases. I guess I'll just plan on laughing it off that the store made a mistake?

I think all stores do this.  We received the identical serving pieces at our engagement party, we did keep one extra, but returned the others based on whether we thought it would be useful to have more of.

I think some people look at the registry online and go to the store to purchase without checking again to see if it has been purchased.  Fortunately, if it was purchased off the registry, it makes returns really easy.
  • This happens. If they buy the item in store, it can take a while for the computer system to update. For my friends shower last year, when I was a bridesmaid, I picked out their pizza stone, pizza cutter and got a nice cookbook to go with it. At the shower, turns out another bridesmaid got the exact same gift! Well, different cookbook. After laughing about it, we compared experience shopping off the registry and found out that both our checkers (at different stores) rang up the registry wrong. Even after the shower, the pizza stone didn't show up as completed, and I believe the bride had to delete it by hand!
  • Crate and Barrel is the only website that doesn't let people buy straight off your registry if the item has already been purchased. In person may be a different story, though.

I've had two or three duplicates from Macy's. It's annoying and I wish the store would be more on top of things in regards to registry items being purchased. But I can always return stuff :)

Like PP said, it often takes some time for the purchased item to appear on the registry. Perhaps these 2 guests printed their lists at home & didn't know that it was later updated. That's the problem when a lot of your guests wait until the morning of your shower to go shopping. If everyone is buying at the same time, it is nearly impossible to avoid duplicates. Somehow, I didn't get any duplicates!

My ILs purchased duplicate items off our C&B registry in the store.  Aside from the fact that my MIL saw me open these gifts at my shower, they proceeded to buy these items for our wedding gifts anyway.  They swore up and down that the items were not "fulfilled" on our registry.  Online it most definitely said they were purchased.  I think it happens at every store.

Actually, even Crate & Barrel apparently allows you to buy more than registered for. We asked for four placemats and matching napkins and future MIL must think I'm messing because she bought us 6. :)
  • At my store, the problem of duplicates usually comes from human error.  I try to talk to each guest and steer them away from items that have already been purchased.  I also try to make sure that if they've brought in a registry they printed themselves, that we print up a new one that's more up to date.  Sometimes people see what's online then come in a few days later and don't say it's from a registry and don't check to see if it's still needed.  Most stores have generous registry return policies, but it can be a pain lugging the items back to the store.

So this happend to me this week too, at Kohl's. I actually bought the item after placing on the registry, it's a expensive item too. I am really hoping it is just a mistake. It wouldn't be a big deal to return one but still. There was like maybe a 10 minute delay from the time I placed it there and bought it. Strange. Guess I will find out in a couple of days.

  • It happened to me at C&B... My shower was two weeks ago so the registry was definitely updated.  Yesterday it showed that I got two above the requested quantity.  They're good about returning items off the registry so I'll just take them back.

  • It happened to us too that we ended up receiving more of some items than the number we registered for...although these were towels and wine glasses which we were glad to have more of.  It's not a big deal.  If you only wanted one of that item, return the duplicate and use the credit to get something else that wasn't fulfilled.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
