Registry and Gift Forum

second marriage for both...

As we've both been running households of our own for some time now, we have no great need for anything for 'setting up house' . . . and neither of us really has any huge desire to set up a registry.

My guess is that people will still want to get gifts though . . .

Should we register for things that we could use upgrades on (new towels, new pots and pans)?

i would love to register with something like Heifer International or International Justice Mission.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

  • If you don't really need anything I wouldn't register.  People will still bring gifts I'm sure.  This way they will have to put some thought into it. Smile
  • Personally, I wouldn't register or do showers for a second wedding.

You could do a small registry for things that you really need, but keep it small.

Yes, you should absolutely register for upgrades.  Some guests will insist on bringing boxed gifts, and if you don't register, you'll get a lot of random weird gifts you don't need or want.

Please do not "register" for a charity.  This is incredibly controversial and a lot of people, myself included, find this rude for a variety of reasons.

  • A lot of people dislike the idea of charity registries and find them rude.

Do you or FI have any hobbies that'd you like to register for? Or other fun things? Camping gear, electronics, etc. If you do this though, try to make sure you hit a variety of price points for your guests.

You could do upgrades in addition to fun some for the traditionalists on your guest list.
  • Registering for upgrades is a great idea but decline any shower offers.

Additionally, please don't register for a charity.  When I attend a wedding I want to give a gift to the bride and groom.  If they want to give my gift to their charity of choice, great, but I don't like being told what charity to donate to as I am perfectly capable of making this decision on my own.  I'd probably not give a gift at all if a charity was my only choice.
  • Thanks, all. i'd never considered registering for a charity to be rude, but i can see what you're saying about preferring not to be told where to donate. i've definitely been to showers myself where we were specifically asked for cash and was appalled.

Thank you for your input and ideas!
