More than one registry

I was only planning on registering at Bed Bath and Beyond, but my fiance's mother told me that we need to register at Pottery Barn, Williams and Sonoma, and a local store for china. I wasn't planning on registering any of those places, but she made it very clear that that is where her friends will want to shop. Wow... three registries... That's way more than I was planning. Problem is, as college students or recent graduates none of our friends can afford those places, and I don't want them to think that I expect them to. I just want them to come to our wedding, but I know they'll want to give us something. So I think I'm going to register at BBB for items that we need and my friends can pay for without wrecking their budget. That puts me at four registries, which I think is completely ridiculous, but I don't know what else to do. I refuse to make my friends think they have to buy something at any of the more expensive stores, but his parents' friends want to shop at specific stores and will be upset if they have to go somewhere else. What would you do?

I would add on one more store if you can find more things that you'd like.  It's fine to have more than one registry, and it sounds like your guestlist might like to have some variation.  It's also ok to have a variety of price ranges--both low and high end.  (The gold touch pans from WS are great, if you end up registering there.)

Register where you want.  Maybe compromise and pick 1-2 of the stores your FMIL is suggesting?  I have 3 registries, and I think it is common to have that many.  Gives your guests more of a selection, there is no way we would have found everything we want/need at 1 store.  Many girls these days don't register for china, so I'd probably skip that one.

I think it's fine to register at more than one place.  Ditto PP about the goldtouch bakeware at WS - it's ridiculously amazing.

Even if your friends won't be able to afford it, directing them toward BBB (if they ask) should satisfy them, and honestly PB and WS have plenty of lower-priced items if you just take the time to look.  I went to several weddings in college and always ended up buying those gifts at PB and WS because the bride and groom had chosen some lower-priced things (ie: dishcloths/towels, oven mitts, etc at WS - pretty good price and really nice quality).

Frankly, even four stores doesn't bother me, particularly when one is a specialty store for china.  This is extremely common in my circle and it may be common in your FMIL's circle also.  If you don't want it and don't anticipate ever wanting it then that's a different story.  But if you weren't planning on registering for china because you thought it's too expensive, I'd modify my thinking.  A lot of people in certain social circles give china as a wedding gift, and you may get more than you anticipate.

I would pick one or two stores that she has suggested.  I think its okay to register at multiple places up to three.  After that it seems like too much.

It's your guys wedding- Register where YOU want!! We registered at BBB, Target and Kohls for more variety of items and costs. No one should tell you where to register for your gifts, thats just rude. You can take opinions and advice, but you should register wherever the gifts you are looking to receive are located at. Goodluck!

Ok. Thanks everyone. I'm fine registering where she wants me to- I like the things there, it's just that they're expensive, and all my friends are on limited budgets. We all buy gifts for each others' weddings, but it's usually in the $15-20 dollar range. I don't have much family, either- my parents, one uncle and his wife, and one living grandparent. So there isn't really anyone on my side that I expect significant gifts from. My parents are paying for the wedding, and my grandmother bought my dress. I really can't skip registering for china. When we host his family for holidays a few years from now, I'll need it.

I'm registered at all of the places that you mentioned, but Im not worried about my college aged friends simply because there are large price ranges that you can work with. My Williams-Sonoma registry consists mainly of the 19-70 dollar range, with lots of baking and cooking stuff that they all know we love and can easily afford. I do have a $350 pastry blender and FI has a $400 dollar beer cooler, but I know that my elder relatives will be the ones buying these for us, if at all. Just because you put it on your registry doesn't mean you expect to get it, it just means it would be something you would love to have.
