What to do with gift you have no idea what store it came from and you don't need?

We just got a casserole dish from my boss that we don't need. I don't want to be rude and ask where did you buy this from so I can return it because I already have 10 casserole dishes? What do you suggest we do with something like this? We registered at Target and she didn't buy this there, I've never even heard of the brand of this pan and have no clue where to start looking... should I just put in my cupboard and let it go?

*I did send a gracious thank you and did not let on that we did not need another casserole dish.

  • I received a similar item at my bridal shower. I googled the brand to see what stores came up that it was carried at and went with the assumption that it was purchased from the store brand that was in our town. I returned the item, without a receipt, and used the store credit to purchase something that we would be able to use.

That is a good suggestion. I will have to try that when I get home. I'm pretty sure she bought this online, so hopefully, I can find this at a store in town somewhere, cause I have soooo much pyrex and this is not a pyrex and doesn't have a lid and I don't even see it being useful at all.

  • I would try what PP suggested.  I would definitely not ask her where she got it so you can return it.  If you are unable to return it, you can try to sell it (ebay/craigslist?) or donate it.
  • Yeah you can try Googling the brand to see if somewhere in your city sells it. There is always the possibility too that your boss bought it online.

If you cannot find where it was purchased, at least you weren't out money for it, KWIM? I would probably donate it if you truly don't need it.

  • Also check popular stores in your area online.  We had the same thing happen, when I googled it I couldn't find any place I could return it to.  When I was browsing a department store's website for something else, I happened to come across the item.

What brand is it?  Someone here might know who carries it.
  • Do you have an apple or android smart phone? They have the barcode scanner and you can use that to see what exactly it cost and to find out what stores sell it. I used it last year on a Christmas present....

  • See if you can find a store that carries that brand.

If not, re-gift it to your sister as a Christmas gift or a cousin as a wedding present.  Or donate it. If you can wait a few months there will be lots of organizations collecting household goods and gifts for needy families at Christmas.
  • I have a story. This girl I knew from school had the same thing hapen. She got this bowl that was nice but she had a crapload of bowls and crap and was decorative. Long story short she gave it to her siste who took it to a resale shop and here the freaking bowl was some fancy junk that was hand blown and blah blah blah. Anywhoo, the resale shop was going to give her like a 100 outright and after some research she found it was worth a lot more. Funny how all the sudden she wanted to keep it.

I'd keep it. Pop it in a box somewhere because I bake and cook all the time and have a ton of pyrex but there are times when I wish I had just one more or when one goes missing after taking it to a friends party and they swore they gave it to me and they don't have it.

Also, I would say something to the giver like "I used that casserole last night and my mom looved it. She was wondering where it came from or if you could give her the website." Just an idea - maybe a bad one, but an idea lol.

  • yeah there is actually quite a few people online who will jump at buying brand new unwanted items from a wedding or other event.  I've always like EBay

  • Does your office ever have potlucks?  Might score you some brownie points with the boss to use the casserole dish for the next one...
