Wedding and new home owners in one year

My fiance and I are getting married in October and recently bought a house which will be done in July. We both don't own furniture and have little to start out with and we'd rather pay for the towels, blender, etc, if we can get help furnishing our new home. Is there such a registry where we can ask people to pitch in money to buy a piece of furniture room by room? I've heard of such things for honeymoons but haven't found anything doing this. Thank you for your help.

Thank you all for your input.
I appologize I wasn't clear on what I meant. What I was trying to say was something like what honeymoon.com does. A friend of mine who already had everything for their house didn't need anything so they registered for things they could do on their honeymoon to Hawaii. The site set it up where anyone could pitch in to purchase a thing that they had wanted to do together (couples massage, snorkling, island tour) in increments of $20. This is what I meant when I said "pitch in", pitch in, in increments of $20 to buy a piece of furniture.

  • Asking for cash for furniture, honeymoon, house, etc. is rude. You do not ask your guests for their cash. People already know a cash gift is great and will put check/cash in a card if they want to give that to you.  No need to set up a cash registry.

Do a small registry for people who want to give boxed gift and other guests will more than likely give you cash.

<div>If people want to give money, they will write you a check.  Asking for money is rude, and honeymoon/mortgage/cash registries are both rude and nonsensical.  </div><div>
</div><div>Some stores like Macy's or Crate & Barrell have some furniture pieces that you can add to your normal registry.  Add a few there and spread the word that you are saving up to furnish the whole house.  Those who are comfortable giving money will do so.</div>

There are places where you can register for furniture like Crate and Barrel.  I don't know how well that would go over with some of your guests though.  People are probably going to be more willing to give you those little things like towels, kitchen accessories and sheets to start your home but every little bit helps!
  • Maybe you could register someplace like Pottery Barn?   They have a lot of nice furniture.

If I saw that a friend had registered for furniture at Pottery Barn, I would probalby get a small boxed gift (maybe kitchen utensils or towels), and a gift card to go towards a furniture purchase.

Also, it's worth checking to see if PB has a registry completion discount (they might not, and if they do it might not apply to furniture), but that could help you get a small discount on things that you have registered for.

  • I know that Macy's lets you return items and you can use the store credit towards furniture. That being said, I have no idea what kind of furniture they have. I think registering for furniture could be kind of tricky. We moved into our house in August and have been slow to buy additional furniture beyond what we had in an apartment. We add "grown up" pieces as we go along. We still have plenty of Ikea furniture (particle board stuff) which we don't have to be super concerned about replacing. We are planning on buying nicer furniture as we decorate each room. Let your family know to pass along the word that you will be furnishing a home and go from there. How awful would it be if someone bought you a couch you hated?!

  • I think you can do this at Macy's - calle dthe dream list or something,. I don't think registering for cash or furniture is rude. Your family and friends love you- so wouldn't they rather contribute to what you really want instead of getting a random item? If you're asking for what you want- go for it and really ask for what you want!! Thats what we're doing!!

But I do think its a great idea to have different price points for all budgets.....because its the thought that counts :)

You're wrong.  Stop giving horrible advice and for the love of god stop being rude to <em>your</em> guests, too.
  • So, you want the furniture to come months AFTER you buy your house?  That just doesn't make sense.  You can make do without the kitchen and bath stuff than you can without the furniture, so whatever $$ you were going to put towards household items, I would be putting towards furniture.

And as a homeowner, you really need to be prepared to just have more money on hand in general.  So much more can go wrong and there's so many things that need bought (think lawn care, for example) that add up, so you really need to start thinking of how to fund those things.  Don't spend too much money on the little stuff until you've lived there.
  • Registering for furniture is no different than registering for other household items, requesting cash is considered rude, but I don't think that's what you were trying to say.

Macy's has a kind of back door way to register your furniture where your reigstry consultant can add the items you like as a generic item and you let them know to take them off as you recieve them.  You can do a "wish list" for furniture on the web site, but people have to know to check your wish list and not your registry for those items.

There are other sites, like Amazon, or even Walmart where you can register and yes, some will let you do features where people can chip in to buy them.  I suggest you do some digging to find out who offers what.

Registering for gifts that you fully intend to return and use the money to buy other things is incredibly rude.
