BBB guests can add things onto my registry??

so as a daily registry stalker, i went on my BBB registry as i do everyday... well toay i had 7 new gifts that were purchased, but when i scrolled down my registry to see what they were, there were 7 new items that were purchsed that i never added to my registry... i contacted the "live assistance" help thingy & this was our convo:

me:  i just logged onto my registry & noticed that quite a few items are now showing up on it that were not on it before... they are items taht i didnt register for... next to the items it says "0 requested" and "1 purchased." how did this happen?
BBB: That means that someone has purchased an item for you that you did not request.
BBB: So a clerk at the store has added it on so you would be aware.
me: why are other people allowed to add things to my registry??
BBB: The clerks at the stores add them on.
BBB: Not actual purchasers.
BBB: They do it for the registrants to be aware of what being ordered for them.

i was quite surprised... i wish they didn't do this... if someone buys me something that is not on my registry, i would rather be surprised when i open the present... oh well!!!

just wanted to let you girls know in case the same thing happens to you...

  • yeah.... so I have that too.

but the things that have been added I haven't gotten and they have been on there for seriously 4 months. I have had a shower since then too.

and who would by a decorative wall clock for me? One that is kinda house specific.  I think its annoying and wrong.

I think what happens is that the cashier scans the registry and doesn't only scan the specific registry item that the person purchased, but also scans their other items, so when the person buys stuff for themselves in the same purchase, it still shows up on your registry because of the cashier's mistake.  Does that make sense?

It's possible that someone bought you an item that you didn't request, but I really think the customer service explanation is BS.  If I buy someone a gift off-registry, why would I want it to be added to their registry so they would know in advance?
  • I've also seen it show up on other people's registries with very similar-but-not-exactly-the-same items: for example a square v. a round grill pan from the same company. The guest clearly bought (either intentionally or unintentionally) a different item than was registered for.

If it was done unintentionally, that would explain why they have the cashier scan it.

  • The cashier has no way of knowing what is specifically on the registry unless the customer tells them. So it could be either person's fault. Or maybe what you wanted they didn't have, but they did have something close to it so they bought that. The reason they put it on your registry is so you can return it easier, so it actually benefits you. Once you get the item, if you decide you do not want it, you can return it. Or if you like it more than what you wanted in the first place, you can delete the other item off your registry. It's not really a big deal...

if you never receive the items, it was probably a mix-up and they didn't tell the cashier that what they bought wasn't for the registry couple. Again, not a big deal...calm down.

  • The good news is that it's mow on your registry and if you don't want it, it can be easily returned. Also it may have been something that the person bought for themselves and was accidentally added to your registry by the cashier.

  •  I think I know what's going on. When the cashier has a registry purchase, they have to scan the barcode for the registry first. Then all the items the person purchased are added as purchased on the registry. If the cashier doesn't go back and remove the other items the person purchsed, they will stay on the registry. I bought something a while ago from BBB for a friend's registry and the cashier asked if all the items I was purchasing were gifts for the registry. When I said they weren't, she went back and removed the other items I purchased from my friend's registry.  After that time, I've just had the cashier ring out gifts on a registry as a separate transaction from the items I'm purchasing for myself.
  • I'm not sure why you're no longer surprised.  If you're checking the registry for purchases then you already know what you're getting.  If someone adds a few items to a gift, what's the harm?

To aggiebug, you seriously think it's "wrong" for someone to buy you items that aren't on the registry?  It's a gift!
  • its most likely items they bought for themselves that pops up. A soda could pop up on your registry if the cashier dosent mark it as not a registry item. it happens all the time.

  • Okay... so the cashier scans the registry barcode to make sure that the gift-giver's purchase comes off the registry.  Most cashier's don't check to make sure the item is actually the same as what is on the list.  What happens with an item not on your list of "requested" items is that it DOES show up on the registry -- -- but under "quantity requested" it will say 0, and under "quantity fulfilled/received" it will say 1 (or however many were purchased).  It's a way for the registry program to keep track of things that have been purchased for you as gifts so that whether you keep them or return them, you know what you got, or you can return them a LOT easier.  It's just how 99% of registries work.  It's not that the clerk "added" them to your registry (as a gift wanted), but that the computer automatically adds it under "items received" or whatever the category is called.

Don't let the entitlement of some people make you "mad" that someone got you a gift off-registry, it's a gift!  The list is simply a suggestion, and I'd be REALLY honored and flattered that someone thought enough of me to purchase a gift for me in the first place.  :-)

  • i'm not mad at all- i was just surprised because i have never seen this... i just think it's weird, but at the same time i understand about making it easier for returns...

  • Well if it is for you, and you hate it, you can return it for cash rather than store credit even without a receipt, like your other BBB registry items.

This happened to my friend - she didn't register for much kitchen stuff, and she ended up with a lot of kitchen towels, utensils, etc. that weren't originally on her registry. She did end up keeping some of it, but she was able to easily return what she didn't need.

They may have bought it for themselves.  This happened to me.  My mom bought me a gift off my registry at BBB, and a few things for herself as well, and the items she bought for herself showed up on my registry as purchased.  One of them was a plunger...hah.

Most stores (incl BBB) will not let you receive cash back for a registry item.  I think it'd be shady to take the cash for a wedding gift anyways...
  • Actually aegrish, BBB does give cash back on registry items. We got duplicates of a few things and they offered me cash when I went to return it. I was going to purchase other items from our registry so wanted store credit instead.

  • Occasionally this is just a cashier error because they do have to go in and out of registry mode, but sometimes its just like you said...ppl want to get you something specific and they go shopping off of the registry instead. The adding it to your registry makes your returns/exchanges easier on you, especially if there was no gift receipt included. Be happy its added, not mad. Its a conveniene for you, since the registry acts as one big gift receipt.
  • I noticed this on my registry the other day.. I realized how/why it happened...but I actually found it helpful. We had registered for a bunch of white towels, and the person purchased very similar towels, but not the exact ones. So I could see them online to see exactly what they purchased..and how many.. and then I just removed the original ones from my registry, that way I won't get duplicates.
If I hadn't know that the person had bought us different towels, then the original towels would've remained on the registry - somebody else may have bought them, and then we'd have a whole bunch of towels we didn't want/need. So In the end, it was helpful!

And all of the PP's are right.. the employee doesn't know what is on our registry, they just scan the code, if the person tells them that whatever they are buying is on the registry. So if the person buying you something thought it was the right thing, but it wasn't, then the computer will automatically add it on the registry. It is not the employee adding it themselves to help you out like customer service told you.
