Wedding gift re-gift question

Hello - I wandered over here from The Bump with a question:

I'm aware this may be a bad thought to have, but my husband's boss of five years ago (who he hasn't seen in five years) sent us a really hideous picture frame as a wedding gift. It was such a nice gesture though and we were touched that he thought of us. He wasn't invited to the wedding and I'm surprised he had our address. 

I see my friend, who is getting married soon, has this exact hideous picture frame on her registry. The one we were gifted is in the box, totally new, has all the care instructions etc. Is it the worst thing in the world to give it to her? The thing is worth $149, apparently. Her registry has a button to "save" the item for in-store purchase so it wouldn't be purchased twice. It would look as though I bought it in person. I just don't know if this is "okay". It seems kind of bad of me although no one would know. Could I give it to her as a shower gift and buy something else for the wedding?

If she wants it, go ahead and give her the one you have.  It's not terrible of you; it's something she'll enjoy.

I think it's fine.  You get it out of your house and save some real money.  She gets the picture frame she really wants.  Win for all.

In general, it seems like its acceptable to "re-gift" as long as 1) the original giver won't find out about it, and 2) the new recipient genuinely wants it.     

If she has registered for it, then I think it's okay to give it to her.   If there is a way to mark it as "purchased" or "saved" on her registry, then that's awesome.  Even if she didn't I would say it's okay to give to her -- just because she registered for something doesn't mean you need to buy it from the store she registered with if you can find it for less somewhere else.  And YOU have found it for NOTHING in your house.  Sounds like a win to me!

Ditto everyone else.  I would try calling the store she is registered at.  Tell her you bought the frame from her, but forgot to have it taken off her registry or marked as purchased.  They should be able to update her registry to show that she got it, so no one else buys it.

Seems like a crazy coincidence. Normally re-gifting is really a dangerous game to play, but it doesn't appear like you'll cross paths with the original gift-giver in any way.

P.S. Any chance you could post a link to this hideous frame that costs $149?!?!

I'd like to see it too, haha!  Definitely mark the item as "purchased" on her registry, and you should be good.

I'd regift in this situation.  It's a new item and you know she wants it.  Win-win.

I would suggest that you open the package, make sure the frame is still in perfect condition, etc before re-wrapping and sending.  I once received a re-gifted item where the original gifter had put a small card inside the packaging.
