The idea of more stuff makes me *twitch*

Okay, so admittedly I'm biased because I've moved once or twice a year for the last decade and I'm now to the point where I measure everything I own in how hard it is to pack and how heavy it is.  I have an apartmentful, so does my fiance, and he's not thrilled about the idea of more stuff either.

I've read the boards, everyone seems to be saying "upgrade!" or "small registry and hope for cash!" and I'm not comfortable with either of those options.  I'm going into the clergy, and it's important that my belongings be functional but I can't own a lot of expensive stuff with the kinds of congregations I'm planning on working in.  And our stuff works fine.  And the "small registry hinting for cash" thing plus word of mouth sounds manipulative to me.  I mean, when we say "tacky" we really mean "greedy", right?  How is word of mouth actually any less greedy than putting a note in the invite?

So we were thinking of doing both a charity registry and a honeymoon registry- the size of the wedding we need to have to let both families attend is going to eat up our budget as we are paying for everything ourselves, and we would like a week at a cabin in the Upper Midwest or something.  But from the sounds of things on the boards here, both are bad ideas what with the percentage fees involved.  I'm good with just giving people one specific charity or something- probably Habitat, I dunno- so people can go straight to their website (or phone) to donate, that works.

Regarding the honeymoon, I'm trying to think of a way to *not* ask straight for cash.  With the new universal registry thing, maybe we can register for gas cards (we will almost certainly drive, not fly), gift cards specific to the places we'd like to eat at while there (all very affordable) and maybe some entrance fees to parks and museums and such, to also provide some lower-cost options.

What do you think?

ETA: Sorry for this, folks.  I'm having some family drama and took it out on the boards.  I'd delete it if I could.
