Big ticket items on your registry

Okay, so, as many of you are aware I'm sure, most stores give you that cool off whatever is leftover on your registry after the wedding.

There are a few thing the FI and I would LOVE to have in our new home post wedding, but are too cheap to pay full price for since we're trying to put all our extra cash for the wedding but we would honestly be horrified if anyone purchased for us. Think like a big screen 3d tv or an expensive leather sofa.

I know it seems like cheating, but would it be so bad to put those things on our registry so we could buy them for ourselves later? Most of our registry items are in the 75 and below range. I know they would look out of place, but will people think we're being greedy or dilusional?

  • I think it's fine. If you feel weird or uncomfortable w/it, put those items on right before your wedding.  And, you never know, maybe a group of people will chose to purchase it for you all together.

I really dislike electronics except very small things like alarm clocks and weather radios - sofas and furniture I'm sort of meh about, because I assume the couple did it for the completion discount.

Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel both let you add things to your registry (including furniture) after your wedding to get the discount - so you could do it that way if you are looking at those two stores.

Also, Crate & Barrel has a group gift option for expensive gifts - so guests can put a contribution toward a gift, and it will come off your registry as completed once enough guests contribute.  I'm not sure how often people get the full purchase price, but it's sort of a neat function, and as a guest I'd be happy to conitrbute my $100 or whatever to part of a sofa for you, as long as I knew that was actually what you were going to end up with.

<div>I agree with this.  I wouldn't go nuts & I'd keep it limited to a few items, but I assumed my guests were intelligent enough to know that I didn't expect anyone to buy me a $1500 furniture piece we had on our registry at C&B.  Whenever I see something like that on a registry I certainly don't think the couple assumes someone is going to buy it for them, and I kind of like seeing what they'll likely spend the money I gave them for their wedding on.  And who knows, people might actually band together and buy it.  A few of us pitched in and bought a pots/pans set that was over $500 for my one friend who got married last year.</div>

I see nothing wrong with having a couple big ticket items on there, as PP said, my friends and I get together for gifts, and typically we're looking to spend $500-600.  For more than one or two though, I would wait and do it right before the wedding.  A lot of older guests aren't aware of the completion discounts (my FMIL didn't know until recently, and we registered a while ago).
  • I would probably wait until the day before the wedding and put those huge items on there. I would just personally feel uncomfortable having a few items that cost over $1000 on there long-term where my guests can see it. I might pick ONE big ticket item and put it on there early because sometimes groups of friends or co-workers may go in together on a more expensive item. For multiple items though, I would wait until the last minute to add them.

I'm inclined to agree with this. We have a coffee table that's $800 on our registry, but I wouldn't personally feel comfortable having any more big ticket items. Hard to imagine anyone side eyeing just one though.

My understanding is that you get 10% off the items left on your registry, but only twice--once online, and once in the store. So you would have to buy everything at once to get the discount, whereas with other stores, I believe you can buy off of registries multiple times and still get the completion discount.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong!

  • FH and I put a tv on our registry.  We don't actually expect to get it, but we put it on there so that if people choose to give us money they will know something that we plan to use it on.  I do know a friend that got a big ticket item because everyone pitched in from their bridal party.
