Holding off on fine china?

So FI and I don't host parties really... ever. And if we do they're super casual. We don't plan on having kids so family get togethers at our house will be extremely rare (including our family issues... parents etc). Anyways... we definitely need casual china (someone told me 12 settings?), but we thought about just nixing the formal china.

But of course my mom is causing a stink about it saying I'll regret it (really???). So FI and I thought, since there's a bunch of other things that are way more important than formal china and we aren't expecting too lavish gifts, we would just forget about formal for now. We'll see how the shower(s) go and, if closer to the wedding we've gotten all of our casual and a lot other stuff has been taken, we'll add formal.

Does this sound reasonable? I'm wondering if anyone's ever not registered for formal china before. I don't know if this is necessary or just another wedding spending ploy. lol!

Re: Holding off on fine china?

  • We are not registering for china either. Not only do we not have the place to properly and safely store &/or display it, but our current apartment is not conducive to entertaining. We will likely be moving shortly before or soon after our wedding. And who knows, my taste may change in 5-10 years, so I'd rather wait to get something I know I'll love forever and not ask people to spend so much money on something that we really won'e be able to use for quite some time.

  • We didn't register for it and I'm really glad we didn't. Even though I can see us hosting family dinners, holidays, etc. in the future, there's no way we could fit another set of anything in our house.  Sure, we could've stored it at our parents' house but we were much happier to receive gifts that were practical and useable now.

Like PP's said, you could always find a pattern that can be used everyday or dressed up with linens, etc. for more formal use if you need it. We registered for a set at C&B that is white and looks great when put on a table with a full place setting, napkins, etc.
  • If you don't think you'll use it, it's fine to skip it, or wait.  It can be very expensive, and I would hate to have someone spend that much money when we don't use it often.

Another thing to keep in mind--a lot of fine china is sold in single place settings.  A friend registered for very expensive fine china and only got 3 place settings.  They were stuck buying the other place settings themselves.  So make sure if you DO register for it, it will be something that you won't have a problem buying yourselves to complete the set if necessary.

  • I'm not registering for formal china. We would NEVER use it. I think it really just depends on your lifestyle.
