When do people normally start their registries? A couple months before the wedding or well before that?

I started mine online about about 6 months before the wedding.  We didn't go in store to finalize everything until about 3-4 months before the wedding - but it also depends on how early your shower is.

We just got back from registering for ours and we're getting married this October.  If you register too early sometimes they pattern you want is no longer available by the time someone gets around to buying it.  Since your wedding is about a year away I would suggest waiting unless you're having an engagement party.

We did ours in March for our July wedding. That was a little early, but it was one of those things I felt like we could do early to get it out of the way. There are definitely items at Target that have gone on clearance or are no longer in stock from then, so just be careful with seasonal items. You can always update online!!

It really depends on what you're registering for, we registered about a year in advance (we had an e-party and gifts are traditionally given where we live) and only had a couple things that were discontinued by the manufacturer that we needed to select new items.
