I wasn't planning on Registering For china, but my SIL and a woman at work said if I didn't I would never get China and they suggested to.

I was cerious of what others were doing?

Re: are you registering for china?

  • It all depends on if you see yourself using the fine china for the future.  We plan to use it for birthdays, family dinners at least once a week, holiday meals, etc.  So, yes, we did register for fine china!  There are some brides on here who register for more casual china either because they are going to inherit grandma's china, don't want fine china, or already have some as a gift.  If you would see yourself someday buying it, I would suggest picking some out and at least getting 8 or more place settings (12 is the recommendation by the store), or at least enough for your average family gatherings plus 1 or 2 more for breakage or extra just in case.

Thanks for your input,  I'm really at a loss, because I think I may use it at sometime but I don't know where we are going to live yet so I don't know if I will have room for it, but I do see how if you don't get it at your wedding you never get it.  I would probably get 12 piece setting, I could see us hosting his side of the family holidays at times so it would probably be used.

  • I'm not registering for it.  Don't register for it just because someone else tells you too!  that's silly.  If you want china, yes go ahead and register.  If you are on the fence about it, go take a look at some at BBB or Macy's.  Think about it before you add them to your registry and guests start looking it up.  Sure you can always take something back if you need to, but you don't want to make guests buy fragile gifts that you are probably going to return.  And I don't think it's true that you'd NEVER get china if you don't get if for your wedding.  Just today someone posted that they bought their sister China for her birthday...
  •   We're not. We decided on really nice every day dishes. FI's family are all big into china, so we got some looks when we told them. But, if we don't get all of it, we won't want to spend the money to complete our set. Also, FI will most likely inherit a set from his grandparents soon. I'd rather have the family heirloom than buy something new.

  • We're registering for china. We love to entertain and will use it. I think china is  made to be used for even the slightest special occasion and I know we would get  good use from it. It all depends on your lifestyle and taste.

  • Don't register for it unless you feel you'll use it. We registered for everyday stuff and fine china. The fine china only gets pulled out a few times a year, but it was worth registering for since it makes the times when we do use it more special.

  • We are getting our china from my mom. She has two and my sister gets one and I get the other. I love it! She is still using it, which is great because I probably wouldn't use it for awhile.
    I know I wasn't a lot of help, sorry.
  • We're not.  I can't see myself ever using china.

  • We are, but I love china and will use it weekly at a minimum. My mom used hers nearly every day when we all lived at home. I'll eventually inherit one of my grandmother's sets (she has 4, one per season lol) but I think she plans to leave me the Christmas set, so it was still necessary to choose another pattern if I wanted to use it outside December.

  • We kind of are.  I'm inheriting my grandmother's china, so we just registered for an accent/salad plate to coordinate with it.  It was tough to find something to match it exactly (it's more cream-colored than pure white), so we found something that coordinates beautifully.

If we weren't getting my grandmother's china, I probably would have registered for my own set/pattern.  I originally thought I wouldn't, but my mom has already "gifted" hosting Thanksgiving and Christmas morning brunch to us, so we'll use it.

  • We didn't. But I get to pick out one of my grandmother's sets, so we'll have it eventually.

I like the idea about getting an "inbetween" pattern than can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion - great idea!

  • No...I think for our lifestyle it doesn't make sense. Right now, we're very ok with super nice every day plates. Maybe, sometime later in life it may make sense, but we are not the type of people who host very nice dinner parties. Our ideas of very nice dinner parties involve a restaurant downtown.

If it makes sense to you ~ go for it!

  • We didnt go with China, however we did get casual plates, and some really nice snazzy stuff.

No. I have my mother's Christmas fine china set which we use for our family meals at that holiday, and our lifestyle is fairly casual. So a fine china set would be used maybe for Thanksgiving. I couldn't justify that expense, nor spare the storage space. Instead I registered for a white everyday stoneware set (Italian Countryside by Mikasa) and will dress it up or down with table linens and glassware.
  • We registered for nice everyday dishes.  They're much fancier than we have, but simple enough to use everyday.  I wasn't 100% sure I'd use fine china.

Also though, I have a backup.  I'm inheriting 4+ sets of fine china, plus two sets of Christmas dishes (oy).  I'll have christmas dishes if I want them, and if I ever want to use fine china I'll have it.  I can have them at any time as well- so if I wanted them soon, my mom would give them to me (she sure isn't using them!).

Even if I wasn't inheriting fine china I'd really have to think before registering.  I just don't know how much I'd use it.

  • We did.  It's a big thing in H's family, to have the wedding china.
  • We aren't china kind of people, but I would love if someone eventually gave up the reins and allowed us to host a family get together, so we did register for casual china (the only pattern we could agree on). We already have a cheap 4 person set of everyday dishes I had, and an 8 set of nice stoneware my gma got up in alaska that we use daily, or if people are over can be dressed up.Smile

  • We did, but we only got 2 place settings.  We bought the rest.

If you don't have room for it or need it now and weren't planning to register for it, don't do it just because someone else said you should.  That's silly (and giving in to peer pressure!).

And it is silly to say that if you don't get it now, you'll never get it.  If you want it in the future, you can just go buy it yourself anytime you want.  At that point, you can decide if it is worth the money to you.

I feel like this is a good rule of thumb when registering:  If you don't get it, would YOU buy it?  If not, don't register for it.  I think people get caught up with the industry and put lots of things on their registry that they will never use or need.  that's a waste.  Register for what you want and need and will use.
  • We're not registering for china just because we don't think we'd ever use it and we'd rather have people spend the money on something we need like towels or a vacuum.

  • We're not registered for china either.  I'll be getting my mom's china.  So we just registered for a nice everyday plate and server set.
  • We registered for, and received, fine china. We host a large number of formal dinner parties, so I knew china was something I would regularly use. Also, receiving wedding china is a tradition in my family.

  • we registered for china, but we got one of the better-priced ones. We plan on using it for holidays and special occasions, so we really couldn't justify asking our guests to pay over $100 for one place setting. The set we got is pretty, timeless, and you can get a 20-piece set for $99 :)

  • I inherited my grandmother's china.  If I hadn't... I really have no idea if I would have registered for it or not.

I might not have and then bought it in a few years when I might have a dining room.

  • I'm not registering for any, but that's because I already have a set from my grandma.  Even if I didn't have that, I'm not sure that I'd register for any because I don't know how often I'd use it.  It's really 100% up to you.  If you think you'll use it, then by all means, register for it.  If you don't think you'll use it, then I wouldn't register.

  • We are not registering for fine china. We live in a very small apartment far from our families, so we would have absolutely nowhere to put it. Plus, I'm very clumsy so prefer to own dishes that I don't feel bad about breaking lol
  • We did not.  Neither of us are very "china type" people.  We registered for nice everyday stone wear plates that I can dress up for meals.

  • Nope!! I realized I am not going to use it..the only time I would..would be for a holiday so instead of China my hubby-to-be got me the Pottery Barn Reindeer collection to use at Christmas time...which I LOVE!!!
  • I want to register for china, but I am not sure that I will.  My FI just bought me a nice casual set for 8.  I don't see myself needing a nice set of china anytime soon, so I probably won't register for it.  If I want it or need in the future I will just purcashe it then.
