myregistry.com???

This may be an obvious question, but what's the catch with this kind of registry?  I mean, why doesn't everyone do this?  (maybe they do and I'm slow to catch on!)

Who's registered here?  How does it work?  What do you think?

It works perfectly for my situation.  (All my guests are spread out all around the world, so I can't register at a normal department store).

The annoying bit is the shipping costs each store (may) charge for each item purchased.  Lots of sites have free shipping for purchases over, say, $50.00, but what about the smaller items on your list?  They'd have to find those items in person in order to avoid the shipping costs.

Also, the other annoying thing I'm worried about is the older people who may not be too internet savvy, but hopefully they will ask for help from someone.

Apart from those two things, it's pretty well annoying-free ;)

  • This is what FI really wants to do, but user error is my main concern.  Basically, I'm afraid older and non-internet savvy people will screw it up.  And unfortunately, most of our guest list falls in this category.  We'll probably go the traditional registry route, but if there are additional items we really want that we can't find at "registerable" stores, we'll use this to supplement the traditional registry.

Plus, most stores offer a "completion discount" where you get 10-15% off items still on your registry after the wedding.  I know some couples actually add major items they don't expect to receive as wedding presents to their registry just for this discount.
  • Hmmm, I'm torn!  Thanks for the feedback.  The great majority of my guests will fly in from out of state for our wedding.  So I *imagine* they will order online and have it shipped here if they choose to purchase a boxed gift.  The other all-inclusive registry I'm considering is Amazon, but I hadn't heard much feedback on it.  So, thanks, Steph, for the reassurance.  I may just go that route.  :)

[QUOTE]Although I personally like the concept, the feeling is most guests just want to be able to go to their local BBB or Macy's to purchase gifts instead of having to navigate a website and pay shipping. If you want an all-inclusive registry, I think a lot of girls prefer Amazon.com.

I'm setting mine up now and it's so far so good. FI really liked this idea because we can't think of 20 items we need at one store (even upgrades like people suggest). So it's nice to put all the random items on one site.

As for when people actually purchase from the site, they don't have to buy the gift/ship online. They can go into a traditional "brick & mortar" store and click that option when they look at your list. I thought that was kinda cool, especially for the old schoolers.

I am a little worried about the older ladies who won't know what this concept is all about, but stores have their registries online now anyway, so it's not that different.

  • I have a registry on myregistry.com and I LOVE it!  I think it's more or less a "guide" for giftgivers to use, but I've had a few people actually purchase gifts from the link. I also have a couple of very small in-store registries for the older, less internet savy generation.
