what to bring to an engagement party?

If you are attending an engagement party at someone's house, do you bring a hostess gift (bottle of wine/fancy olive oil/etc.) and a gift for the couple, or just a gift for the couple?  Does it matter whether or not you know the party hosts (I don't, in this case)?

Re: what to bring to an engagement party?

  • I've always brought a trinket gift for the couple (wine, etc.)
  • I always bring a gift for the couple, not the hostess. And I bring something universal like you mentioned--wine, candles, olive oil--rather than a "wedding" gift.

  • I usually only bring a gift for the couple too.  My favorite engagement gift to give is a bottle of champagne and two flutes.
  • I usually bring champagne/wine and a nice card.  My mom told me at one point that wine is a traditional engagement gift, with the idea that you are helping the couple build their wine collection.  No clue if that is a fact (probably not) but I liked the idea.  We got a fair amount of wine immediately following our engagement and we were appreciative.
  • As to your question about the hostess gift, I probably wouldn't bring a hostess gift, just an engagement gift for the couple.  I might send a written thank you to the hostess the next day.
  • I would most likely just bring a gift for the couple as PPshave mentioned you can just get somthing nice for the couple to enjoy.  Wine and glasses or something of that sort.  I am not sure if people register for gifts but you could also get flutes engraved with their engagement date on them.

  • No hostess gift is necessary just get the couple something small a nice bottle of wine or a gift card to a restaurant they might like etc.

  • I've only been to one e-party.  I only gave the couple a gift and it was the Williams-Sonoma Bride and Groom Cookbook.  However, I don't think you have to give a gift at all.
