When do I register?

I am a new bride to be, and the first of most of my close friends and my family to be getting married. That being said, it's the blind leading the blind when it comes to some things! One question I do have is when is the best time to register? We aren't getting married for a little over a year, is it better to do it early or 6 months out? What's the proper timeline? Thank you knotties for the help!

Re: When do I register?

  • 6 months should be plenty of time.

Many people suggest not registering too early since items may become discontinued.

  • We are a little over 9 months away but STD's go out in the next few weeks so we did START our registry as I know my side of the family wants to send gifts/buy gifts that can not attend and send them early before the holidays. Every family and guest is different. It is advised to check your registry often though to make sure if something is discontinued you can go in and reselect something and keep it updated and fresh, enough selection and price points for all guests: The standard is to regsiter for 2x the amount of guests and some advise a little extra if there will be a bridal shower. My registry ranges from like 5.99-250 price wise.  Remember some people will want to buy one BIG gift, lots of small gifts to make a basket of some sort, or mid range..so having a lot of options is best.

i registered with 11 months to go to my wedding because people kept asking me if i was registered anywhere.  I figure before my shower I will update my registry.
  • We're registering this summer, so it will be around the 10/11 month mark. I know this sounds early for many, but we're both starting grad school in the fall, so we figured this is one task we can get out of the way early. We know some things might be discontinued, but I think it will be easier to keep an eye on the registry online during the year than to try to carve out time from school and work to register later.
  • I started ours when we sent out our STD's in March and we are getting married in November. We live away from most of my family and some of my FI's family, so we knew some wouldn't be able to make the trip and were called to ask where we registered and such. Just keep in mind- if and when you do reigster more than 6 months before the wedding, check and update your reigtsry for discontinued or seasonal items.

  • We're getting married in April/2012 and will be doing some of our hardcore registering in the fall, that way the bargain shoppers in our families can perhaps get some of our gifts on Black Friday or during the holiday sales.

  • We JUST registered and I still think it's somewhat early but my first shower is in the beginning of August (for OOT family to fly in before school starts again) and we won't have any time this summer/don't want to wait until the last minute.. Too far in advance would require you to constantly make sure it's all still in stock

  • I registered about 10 months out. Things were purchased on the registry immediately and I have gone back into it regualrly to update when things become discontinued to keep it up to date. So far I have only removed about 6 items total so it hasn't changed much.

6 months is fine too. You know your family and friends better than us.
