how long does it take to register?

Hi everyone, my FI and I are going to Crate & Barrel and Macy's this weekend to start our wedding registry.....we don't want to spend hours in the stores...we have a good idea of the things we want and we're hoping to look at a lot of things up close, like fine china, dinnerware, flatware, linens, etc but then plan to do a lot of the registry from home.....how long did it take you to register when you initially went to the stores?  or did you set up your registry from home?  any recommended items/brands/etc?  Any feedback would be appreciated....thanks :-)

Re: how long does it take to register?

  • I would plan to be comfortable, wear comfortable shoes, leave coats in the car, etc, and block an hour or two. We did Target and it took us 3 hours to go through the entire store, very slowly of course. We did BB&B in 2 different stops, each 60-90 minutes. Online is nice, but for us its nice to just do it together, in person. See the color, the quality, plus you're seeing items stocked locally (important for us since we live rurally, our local store will be the only one our guest use). I just think it is hard to discuss and agree on items you're looking at online- one of you will be more in control than the other.
Before you go, take a notebook around your place and take note of the items you want to update or need. that will help you also in remembering things you would otherwise forget.
I would try to break up the stores- go to one, get lunch, and do another. Or better yet, another day.

  • Honestly, it can take anywhere from a couple hours to a few days. You will for sure edit your registry as you go. If you have things kind of picked out, you have a good start to things. Just have fun with it and enjoy the process! Good luck!

  • I am so excited to register and will definitely have fun......we have a good idea of what we need, have, etc and I definitely want to go to the stores first, walk around a little bit and see the china, flatware, coloring, etc up close, but then do some from home.  We're doing Crate&Barrell tomorrow and Macy's on Sunday.....I figured a couple of hours would be fine
  • 4 1/2 hours and 4 fights later we we done

  • We started our registry online, and then we went to BBB to look at things in person.  There were certain things we knew we wanted--like we picked our mixer and food processor based on Cooks Illustrated reviews--so we added them online.  We walked around BBB and picked out things we liked, but by the time we got to towels, we were ready to be done, so we left those for another day.  We ended up deleting our dishes and flatware sets later and going to Macy's to look at some of the things they had (we looked at their website, saw what we thought we liked, and went to the store to make sure it was what we wanted).

I think it will take you less time in the store if you set up the registry online, because then when you walk in, they just give you the scan gun.
  • Agree with PP, wear comfy shoes.

Also, get something in your stomach in case it takes you awhile and your blood sugar drops and you find yourself arguing with your FI over which brand of can opener you register for.

When FI andI I registered last weekend, we were in Pottery Barn for 45 minutes (small store) and Crate & Barrel for about an hour and a half.  Keep in mind that if you lose steam, you can always add stuff online.

  • FI and I went to BBB and had someone take us around the store and it took 3-4 hours to look at everything. We had so much fun :)

  • It can take awhile to register especially in big stores, it took my FI and I hours in BB&B.  Since we only needed one floor of Macy's and Create and Barrel was smaller they took us less time. It will also depend on which store you are registering for the most items, thats the other reason why BB&B took us a few hours.

Registering is a lot of fun so the time will fly by really quickly.

  • Um, a long time (for us).  We've been working on our registries since November, lol.  If we were to do it in one day, I imagine it would take us the whooooole day, plus more time adding/subtracting items online once we got home.  If you can break it up over more than one day, I'd recommend it!  Have fun!
