Shower this Sunday

Hi All,

My shower is this Sunday and I am so excited/anxious! It was suppossed to be a surprise but long story short, I figured it out and quite a few people know. My mom wants me to act surprised for those who think it is a surprise but I think that will make me look ridiculous in front of those that know I know. 

I am a little bit nervous about opening the gifts in front of everyone. I want to be excited and appear gracious but I fear not being enthusiastic enough and someone thinking I didn't like their gift. Also, there are going to be women there that I have never met but are FI's family and close to his mom. I am afraid of opening a gift with their name and not knowing where to look to thank them.

So many things have been purchased off of my Macy's registry. My poor Crate & Barrel registry has seen very little action. Ahhh it's all so exciting and anxiety provoking!

Make it a point to chat a bit with these new relatives before the gift-giving begins.

Also, there should be a couple women helping you who ought to be able to subtly point out where a particular giver is. That's how it's always worked at the showers I've attended. A bridesmaid, usually, picks up each gift, figures out whom it's from, and kinda politely points to that person. It's not just for the bride, it's so the guests, too, know who "Mary Smith" who brought this tiny box wrapped in gold paper (or whatever) is. Also close by will be another helper writing down the giver's name and a description of the gift, to help you with your thank-you cards.

As for looking enthusiastic, since these will be mostly registry gifts, it's mostly things you clearly wanted. Why? Say that. "This is perfect because I love to bake." "We really need queen-sized sheets because right now we both sleep in twin-sized beds." "[Future husband] will be so excited. He can't wait to make fried chicken." That's what I'll be saying, hopefully. And if it's not from your registry, "Oh how lovely, I hadn't considered...But it's perfect."

Since it's fiance's side of the family that you won't know, you should have his mom/sister/cousin that you know/etc. sitting next to you on one side so they can help identify people. Your bridesmaids helping with gifts probably don't know your fiance's family any better than you do so they won't be able to help you much in that aspect.

ElisabethJoanne that is fantastic advice! I have also been dreading opening presents in front of people. I think the worst will part will be if someone purchases something that's not on my registry. What if I have no idea what the item is? For example, someone buys me a vase and I think it's something else? Aaaaahhhhh!

If you can't identify it, go with what you DO know about it- like "Oh, that's lovely! I love the flower pattern" or "that's a beautiful color!". Then ask someone else later.
