Sunday vent NWR

Forgive me for my self-indulgent vent but I feel like I need to get some stuff off my chest and out into the universe.

Had a major work event yesterday and its tradition for us all to go to happy hour afterward.  At happy hour two of my co-workers start talking about how my boss was asking student workers when they were graduating because he may have a spot opening in August.  My co-workers were curious about this because they don't know of anyone on our team that is planning on leaving anytime soon.

!!!!!!!

Well... he was talking about ME!

Everyone knows that I am currently in a Masters program.  Awhile back he called me into his office and asked me when I was graduating.  I was suspicious at first about why he was asking but I went ahead and told him that I would probably be eligible to teach in August at the earliest- IF I pass my PPR, IF i pass my TEXES (while planning my wedding, working a full time job and being a mom) and IF someone hires me.

What the he** is that??  How do you start advertising my position before I have even given any sort of notice??

I guess that means I'm not going to be given that promotion I just applied for.  Apparently I'm a dead woman walking!

  • Maybe just maybe you will get the promotion you applied for and is looking for your replacement in that aspect. Just trying to see a brightside and I hope that would be the case and not that they are trying to get rid of you. Maybe you should discuss it further with him.

  • I'm sorry to hear that.  Although I can't really blame him for shopping around if he knows there's a chance you're leaving, especially if you are an important part of the team in a competitive job market.

FWIW, I haven't given official notice, but my department head already had a replacement for me in mind before I even told her H had taken a job in the panhandle and I was moving in June.  I *also* have been trying to groom a replacement, just in case this other person doesn't work out.

  • Thanks for listening.  I definately understand that a good manager wants to keep a handle on the team and be prepared for any upcoming changes.  I just wish they'd *talked* to me about it, and asked me what my current status was before shopping around for a replacement.  I have no problem giving a 3 or 4 month notice and have done so in the past in other positions.  Truth be told I **wish** I were further along in my Masters program so that I could leave in August but there are still a lot of things that need to be taken care of before that can happen.  Hearing all of this started making me crazy paranoid about my job security!
