Texas-Dallas and Ft. Worth

Happy Saturday!

Super pumped! Working for a few hours and then heading off to Greune to celebrate my mom's 50th with the entire family! Plus a 4 hour car ride with FI, which is actually really exciting. Since he got back into town, my long hours have left us with about an hour of quality time a day.
Anyone else have fun plans for the weekend?

Re: Happy Saturday!

  • Right now I'm working on a paper while FI takes an exam. Then I'm going to go to Joann's and The container store.

Then it's off to the FILs so that they can do FI's taxes before he leaves tomorrow to go to the Austin area...hopefully just for Monday.

  • I'm going to the gym this morning, and then trying to get my errands done before it starts raining.

I have a test that I'm taking tomorrow, so I'll probably spend the rest of the day studying.  After I pass the test, I'm going to go to Barnes and Nobles and reward myself with the second Hunger Games book.  I read the first one last weekend in about two days!

OH yes! I will say, though, when all was said and done, the first book ended up being my favorite. The other two are definitely good, and well worth the read, and seeing the story to the end, but man, there was something about that first one.
    Happy reading!
  • I'm here working on a paper and frantically cleaning the apartment before FI's parents come into town today.  Then I shall be reduced to a ball o' nerves.  Blah.

  • Made it to the cabin around 10:30-11:00 last night.  It was a decent drive, except for every restaurant shutting down by 9 pm.  Having only eaten a banana, some strawberries, crackers, and cheese all day, I was quite the unhappy traveler.

We've got another appointment to look at houses at 2.  The realtor has 4 for us, one of which we know is a no.  It's got FOUR bedrooms, but it's only like 1300 sq. ft.  We only want to see it out of sheer curiosity.

    Angelsong -- good luck today!

Professorscience -- wow, I bet those bedrooms are tiny in that house! I was so disappointed with the 4-bedroom houses we saw -- doll-size bedrooms and bathrooms. We wanted a 4-bedroom house ... until I saw what was available. :(

I really should do some of the random odds and ends I need to do around the house -- figure out how to change the light in the shower, change some more light plates in the kitchen, etc. But I'm sitting on the couch, watching TV and knotting/nesting :)

We've looked at several houses that are 1350-1500 sq ft.  Four bedrooms probably would be really difficult to fit into that space without the bedrooms being TINY.  3 bedrooms in that space is so doable though.  They are usually a master that's 12x14, and the other two bedrooms are either both 12x10 or something similar.  It's really not bad.  I'm interested to hear how the 4 bedroom is though!

Lol.  I remember thinking to myself as I approached gold, "Wow!  Look at me."  And then I completely missed it.  Another Nestie noticed it for me.  And, Amy, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you with your visit!

I think we have finally picked a flooring company.  They will end up being a tad more than the company we were going to go with but they have a known floor (the other company was using a floor Bill--the great googler--couldn't find anything about).  We also bought more tubs to store things in when we move things out into the garage when they get started on the floors, we bought calla lilies, bluebonnet and Alamo fire bluebonnets (the Aggie-ish red), and some more memory for Bill's laptop.  We just got home and I'm exhausted!  My allergies are kicking my butt and I feel like I could sleep until tomorrow.

    You've had a busy day!

I LOVE gardening but I pretty much kill everything I plant.  I do really well watering plants for about a week and by then I've either over/under watered and they revolt.  I killed a cactus last year.  I don't think being a stay-at-home mom will be for me.  I let my plants teach me my life lessons.

But, your flowers sound really cool, especially the bluebonnets.  Where do you buy from -- Calloways, Home Depot...?

What kind of floors are you getting?  Our realtor was all gung-ho when we went into a house that had terrazo floors in the kitchen.  Being naive as I am, I had never heard of it.  When we reviewed flooring in my foodservice class, it says terrazo cracks pretty easily.  It sounded like a huge PITA, TBH.

Ooh, yes, I'm curious who you interviewed and finally picked, too. We just went with a handyman (no web site, no reviews on him, etc) for all our floors and walls, and while we're happy with how that went, I might go with someone else to re-tile our master shower ... someone who has pictures of previous jobs that I can see. Mostly for inspiration, since I have no idea what I want (just not the little pink tiles we currently have, haha!)

I'm buying flowers for my garden next weekend with my MIL's help. I'm so excited to plant! I don't know what grows well here, so I need to do some reading up first. I need something that doesn't need much from me.

Our realtor was really impressed with a house we viewed that had travertine floors, and said they're one of the top flooring choices and was surprised to see it in our price range. But it was this pattern/color<a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.google.com/imgres?hl=en&biw=1280&bih=633&gbv=2&tbm=isch&tbnid=acnd_ESpQAexmM:&imgrefurl=http://www.granitegurus.com/2011/11/10-kitchens-with-checkerboard-floors.html&docid=zs35UpAclN0yXM&imgurl=http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lq1o87xh-gQ/TcCq9TirVqI/AAAAAAAABTo/qSZnP4h6VUc/s1600/ric_roth_kitchen_white_traditional_cabinets_check_checkered_tile_floor_black_granite_countertops_lantern_pendant_light_chandelier_farmhouse_table.jpg&w=800&h=589&ei=fNxbT8DnPKWe2AXd2ZXHBg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=431&vpy=293&dur=2083&hovh=193&hovw=262&tx=106&ty=91&sig=117674409540353792858&page=1&tbnh=134&tbnw=179&start=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:8,s:0" title="http://www.google.com/imgres?hl=en&biw=1280&bih=633&gbv=2&tbm=isch&tbnid=acnd_ESpQAexmM:&imgrefurl=http://www.granitegurus.com/2011/11/10-kitchens-with-checkerboard-floors.html&docid=zs35UpAclN0yXM&imgurl=http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lq1o87xh-gQ/TcCq9TirVqI/AAAAAAAABTo/qSZnP4h6VUc/s1600/ric_roth_kitchen_white_traditional_cabinets_check_checkered_tile_floor_black_granite_countertops_lantern_pendant_light_chandelier_farmhouse_table.jpg&w=800&h=589&ei=fNxbT8DnPKWe2AXd2ZXHBg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=431&vpy=293&dur=2083&hovh=193&hovw=262&tx=106&ty=91&sig=117674409540353792858&page=1&tbnh=134&tbnw=179&start=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:8,s:0"> (link)</a> and just didn't look right to me with the cabinets/appliances they had. (I actually kind of like it in the image I linked, because everything else in that kitchen is so plain -- everything was kind of bold in the house we viewed and it was just LOUD.)

I'm amazed your food service class discussed floors! Wow, that's quite thorough. Was that for if you someday own/manage a restaurant and replace the kitchen floors or something?

We bought our seeds at Blooming Colors in Grapevine.  I thought you could only plant in the fall but she told us that you can plant in March.  You can get bluebonnet plants at Calloways normally but we haven't seen them this year.  The lady at Blooming Colors said that she would be getting in her plants within the next two weeks.  Once these places get them in though, they're gone pretty quickly so definitely keep looking and go back a couple of times a week.  My family bought plants/flowers at Lowe's and Home Depot before but they've gotten pretty sad looking over the past couple of years.  We bought the callas at the Ace Hardware Store in Colleyville--it's more like mom and pop than big box.

Right now, we have our floors down to All American Flooring (the one in Lewisville) and Simmons Flooring (Denton).  The one thing that my husband is unsure of in regards to AAF is that their floors don't seem to be a nationally known floor.  The Simmons people have Bella Cera.  Right now, the Simmons people are about $1000 under the AAF BUT AAF quoted us for the two smaller rooms in addition to our bedroom, living room and dining room.  The salesman seems to think that he can talk his manager down another 10% which would make them about $500ish more than AAF.  He will pay a little more for a known floor so he's okay with that.  I really like AAF myself though because, when they said $5.99 installed, they meant pretty much everything.  It wasn't really that way with Simmons.

We plan on re-doing the floor tile next year and we may go with Simmons here too, but it will be ceramic too.  Some of that Italian stuff looks really nice but it's just so easy to break (like plates).
  • PS:  We're going with engineered hard wood.

I'm a dietetics major but as part of our coursework we have to take 2 foodservice courses.  This one is FS Management, which includes designing/redesigning a commercial kitchen.  Part of it was going through the flooring and what is approved and recommended for foodservice.  I love that our textbook actually felt the need to list "carpet" and explain that its not approved for use in a commercial kitchen.  Darn the luck, lol.

  • We didn't get to see the tiny house, sadly. Apparently the listing agent didn't notify the seller so when we showed up they were trying to move a bunch of stuff out and we decided not to go back. Everything else we saw was nice. I feel a little bad about how much I disliked one of the places H was fond of, but I think we agreed on two of them... Now it's time to settle in for some Jeopardy drinking game!
