Fickle about Dress

I don't know what to even look for in a dress.  I have looked at going to a bridesmaid gown but nothing seemed right,  Thought about a short one but no stores around here with one to try on.  I am an older bride what do you think I should go with.  I am also a size 18 in gowns. Appreate any ideas.

Thank you

Welcome to the board and congrats!

The first thing to think about is matching your dress to the type of event you are havng. If you tell us a bit about your weding then we can get a better idea of how to advise you.

You obviously will wear a different type of gown for a garden vs a ballroom vs a golf club, small vs large.

Can't wait to hear about your plans!

I agree, the type of wedding you're going for has a huge effect on the gown!

Your post has inspired me to make one for all of us to show our gowns, though!  Hope that's ok with you. :)

I'm also an older bride and tried on so many different types of dresses - different styles, colors, types, prices. You name it.

When we'd gone to FI ex-wife's wedding, she wore a dark eggplant color and he made a comment about wanting me to look like I'm at my own wedding. I took that to mean a light color.

I'm going with long, platinum color dress. Doesn't look at all like a wedding dress, but just like I'll be more dressed up than the guests!

Welcome to the board and congratulations!  As an older, second time, bride I completely understand what you are feeling.  I have been looking at bridal gowns since February, but only got the nerve to try on dresses last Saturday.  My biggest fear was looking "too old" in a dress; like I was trying too hard or something. I tried on all different dresses but it is true what other posters have said about the venue making a difference in the dress you choose.  I feel in love with a dress that has a HUGEEEEEEEE poofy shkirt - and its not that I am too old to wear it, it just doesnt make sense to wear such a big dress for my small wedding on a yatch.  I need soemthing that I can navigate in!  My advice is to just let yourself be a bride.  Above all, find the dress that makes you feel FABULOUS!

My wedding is going to be a small church weeding with family and close friends.  And the reception is at a fancy restaurant in a banquet room.  The wedding will be on the formal side but not overthe top I guess you could say,,I do not want a long train,  maybe just a sweep or none.

Venue and style of wedding do play into what type of dress.   Our ceremony venue is the patio of a restuarant which is associated with a golf course, the views are spectacular.   Even though I'm undecided I will not be wearing a ball gown or something with a long train, however our style is formal to semi-formal so I will be wearing a wedding dress.

I'm having difficulty in finding the dress too, so I totally know how you feel. It's tough being a more mature bride than the first timers and knowing what is appropriate - I say if it makes you feel beautiful and confident it's appropriate.

Hi OP, welcome!  Have you looked online for ideas?  Basically I think anything goes in a gown (see the post below about gowns).  Your age shouldn't affect your gown choice.  Look for something that makes you feel beautiful.  FWIW, I'm looking places like JCrew, Nordstroms, BCBGMaxAzria in addition to traditional "bridal" places.  I know the dept. stores carry larger sizes of their dresses.

For a shorter dress, google Dolly Couture.

    Good luck!

Thank you for the welcome, you are all so sweet.  I was looking online today and found some beautiful gowns that were not puffy some had very short train and some had no train..I saw a couple shorter ones that I would like to try on.  I am going dress hunting tomorrow.  I will let you all know what I find.

Again thank you so very much.
