Nuptial Nightmares

There's a post about a divorce not being finalized.  I'm not posting this saying we should run over there to comment, (I certainly won't) but just to our friends who are having the same issues--that there are replies basically saying WAIT.  Just as we've told others with the same issue.  This one is a bit different, though, in that the person thought their divorce was final, but it isn't.

The legal ramifications there are huge!  They have been legally married for 15 yrs and there could be debt issues, ect.  What an awful surprise!

Yeah, about a week after I thought the divorce was final, I received a photocopy of the registered and certified document in the mail.  Then about 6 months into dating Todd, after he'd mentioned marriage a couple of times, I went and got a certified copy. I thought he would just one day come to my place and say "oh, I can't stand being without you for one more minute!  Let's go to the courthouse and get married."   I put the certified copy of my divorce agreement and a copy of my birth certificate in a file, and kept it handy.  :-)  Of course, then he had the brilliant idea of going to the beach, so there you go.  I just don't know how you plan a wedding without actually knowing your divorce is final.  But then again, I didn't even date until I KNEW my divorce was final.  But you know, that's me.

I guess I dont understand how you can NOT know its not final? Seems like once you have the hearing youre waiting on pins and needles till you get the final paperwork and then you throw a party. When the paperwork doesn't show up that should tell you something.. maybe I need to go read this.. where is it??

If things are bad enough that you needed to divorce, wouldn't you follow up on the divorce itself? I still have my stuff ten years later! Kept copy of agreement too because he kept trying to weasel out of things LOL. Bet he doesn't keep his tax returns either. Absolutely wait. Common sense
