Wedding Insurance

Being a dual military couple and planning so far out (March 2013), I am seriously considering wedding insurance... just in case (all these hurricanes arent helping either)! Does anyone else have wedding insurance, or do you feel secure with the clauses in your contracts? Anyone have insurance company recommendations?

First of all, thank you, and thank your fiance for your service.  I don't know anything about wedding insurance, but I think that if you're going to have your wedding and reception in Florida, during hurricane season, and given your employment, it might be a good idea.  However, make sure you read all the fine print; these insurance companies are EXPERTS at getting out of paying.

I'm also active duty (fiance is a civilian) so I completely understand your concern.

I would recommend talking to your vendors first, and seeing if you can put a clause in the contract that if either of you has orders to deploy, you'll get your deposit back.  Most vendors will understand that you're in the military and will work with you.   I would just make sure they know that missing your own wedding, while possible, is an extreme case, and that you would be able to provide orders to prove military deployment.

I've also found that by telling my vendors I'm in the military and asking about cancelation options, I've gotten a few decent discounts.   I certainly wasn't expecting this, but it doesn't hurt:-)

If it's hurricanes you're worried about, then I would look at insurance :-)

I considered doing it, but decided not to.  Got a pretty good rate from Travelers.  Definitely look at the fine print.

Wedding insurance is more than if either of you deploy or a hurricane hits.  Keep in mind if you are serving alcohol and someone gets in a car and kills someone.... you are liable, just like a bar would be for not cutting them off and putting them in a cab.  Better safe than sorry. We will be getting it.  Talk to your insurance company.... my insurance company does event inurance and it's super cheap, you just have to have renter's or homeowner's insurance with them..... I have State Farm.

My insurance agency offers wedding insurance through my agency in Arizona. The ProtectMyWedding package from Travelers is a very inexpensive and customizable policy. (You may not be serving liquor so you can omit it from the policy. etc..) But I agree with the others, always read the fine print, ie.. the policy. Here is a link to a copy of the Travelers policy. It does not cost very much and the IF you have to use the coverage, the stress and heartache avoided will be well worth it. Hope this helps.
