I am not a new Knottie, but new to this board. I amm engaged to a wonderful man that has been married before and has 2 children from his previous marriage (who I love dearly). The thing is this: he had a messy divorde with his ex-wife, and was left with major debt from it.
I, on the other hand have no debt besides some school loans. I do own a property that is worth a significant amount, and he has a property also (worth about 1/3 of mine). His salary is also about 1/3 of mine. We are buying a house together (well, my 10% down payment and he is responsible for 25% of the total household expenses with me covering the rest), but I will be shouldering most of the financial responsibility for it since I make more money.
Because of everything stated above, I would like a prenup to protect him, me, and his children. He flat out refuses. I even offered to go initially to speak to an attorney of his choosing. I don't think we will end in divorce and I am marrying forever, but the reality is that nobody has a crystal ball and we don't know what the future will bring.
What are your thoughts on this? I don't think I am being unreasonable (or am I)? How else can I approach it to make him understand why this is important?
