    During ANY deployment or seperation the family gets "separate rats" or separate rations.  It's to help offset the cost of providing meals in two different places.  Sometimes this is then further offset by them taking out money because the service member is getting fed at the chow hall.  And when I was in Alaska with my first husband, I remember people giving me a hard time because we received "overseas pay."  Uh, yeah, that 12 bucks a month was really, really helpful when milk was $5 a gallon in 1986, and bread was $4 a loaf, and we were bringing in less than 17,000.     

    So, if you seriously think that being married to a veteran is the same as being married to a current military member, think again.  At least YOU get to decide where you live.
