Postal Rate Hike - Questions

Why is it that when I reseached the possiblity of a postal rate hike I couldn't find anything on it, that is until hours after I purchased all the stamps for my invitations and save-the-dates!? Of course the USPS will not take the stamps back but will be happy to sell me two cent stamps to pair with them.  So either I can send out invitations to my April wedding in December or have additional postage tacked on via the two cent stamp in February (sending out the invitation as orginially planned).   So the question is how tacky would the additional postage look? And do people really notice the postage?

You bought the stamps 8 months before you plan to mail them??  Man - you are one organized lady.

You can still use them for the STDs.

I would either pay all my bills with the love stamps (impress your vendors and the electric company with your undying affection) and re buy them when they reprint the correct postage for February, If that doesn't use them up- I'd donate them around Christmas to some needy organization (shelter, veteran's office, elderly complex) and claim the tax deduction for charitable.

Side story- right after I got divorced, I was soooo broke.  On the way to church I stopped and bought a roll of stamps - $37.00.  By the time I got home, I couldn't find them.  My 6 y.o. DS promptly told me that he had put the stamps (the "American flag stickers!") into the collection basket so the poor children could have some stickers, too.  I wanted to cry, but hard to be mad at a generous 6 y.o.  ~Donna

Donna, I love your story! How sweet your DS was when he was 6!!

Yeah I'm sure the wedding ring stamps will go over well as a charitable donation (not that is a bad idea). They were/are sold in panes of 20, and I only need 29 stamps for my save-the-dates, so being ever budget minded I thought I would also order the 57 stamps needed at this time for the invitations.  I couldn't find any information of the rate hike that is looming for January 2011. Of course as luck would have it, just hours later there would be two news stories about the hike proposed/requested for January 2011.  Oh well the pitfalls of being organized.

awww....that story was adorable Donna, I'm laughing my butt off over here.

Angie, why don't you sell them on ebay or something? For a lesser price? Like 25% off.  I'm sure someone will buy them.  Or you can try selling them on here, I'm sure a lot of girls will appreciate the stamps, even at like a 10% discount.

I was going to suggest trying to find someone here that would buy them.  I could take some of them for our STD's.

I went through the stamp dilemma too. Ended up just having the post office do the postage sticker things. No one notices the stamps or lack of. Wink

Not tacky at all ... everyone has to live through postage hikes.  I honestly don't think anyone will notice (or care).

Thanks for the heads up about the postage hike, though.  I tend to buy FOREVER stamps, just to avoid these kinds of headaches.  Now I'll just have to stock up on enough FOREVER stamps before the rate hike to mail the invitations next year.
