Second Weddings

We met with our minister tonight about our ceremony.

And, the first thing he had to tell us is that he won't be here for our wedding!  He has to travel to take care of some family matters and will be gone most of the month of June.  We are so lucky that there is a retired minister in our congregation who will happily perform the ceremony.

Sometimes I swear, I feel like every time I turn around there's SOMETHING that's all botched up, lol.

True, true.  I'm glad you have a good sub.  If something like this happens with our minister, we're screwed.  Hmm ... maybe I need to make a back up plan, in case she falls through.  *sigh*

@Lisa - so true!  I need to check with my WP to see if she has an "officiant-in-waiting" in her rolodex, in case this type of situation occurs.

I'm just trying to make it though the initial planning,  I haven't begun to work on back up plans for everything!!  Geez...

I'm glad for you that there was a good back-up plan.  Our original officiant had to excuse herself because her second child was due on our wedding day.  So we had to find another officiant and lucky for us she was just perfect.

I never would have worried about a back-up plan, but this happened at my first wedding, too, LOL!  That time the minister retired and left the church without a replacement.  Jeesh.

And, at 37 days out, a change in officiant just seemed like a lot.

When my mom got married, her father was the minister at the church.  She didn't want him to perform the ceremony, so she had requested the Bishop come and perform it instead.  The Bishop was late and my Grandfather keep offering to perform the service.  Mom opted to wait and the Bishop showed.  Always good to have the back up plan in the family.

Now i'm not too sure what we'd do if my pastor couldn't perform the ceremony. On one hand, FI's uncle is an ordained minister, so he could technically marry us and has been the minister at most of the family weddings. However, he is southern baptist, and my church is a mainline mix between reformed and evangelical, so my church has made it clear that FI's uncle would not be permitted to perform a marriage ceremony in their sanctuary because their beliefs and doctrines are too radically different. So if my pastor couldn't do it then there's a likelihood that we would have to change venues and do a whole slew of changes to make our "backup plan" work.

My cousin had the minister back out due to illness in the family the day before the wedding! Luckily, they got in touch with his childhood minister who was able to do it. For the record, that was the absolutely most lovely ceremony I have ever attended, so it worked out for the best. :-)

In our case, we have two other ordained ministers in the congregation who function as back-ups, so we are good there. I don't have the main plans set, even, but it is a good reminder to think of back-up plans.
