Second Weddings

Silly name change question!

When I got married the first time, I changed my last name but nothing else. I know some people take their maiden name as their middle name when they get married. Anyway, now that I'm re-married, I want to not only change my last name but I also want to take back my maiden name as my middle name. Has anyone done this after a second/third/etc marriage? I was just wondering what kind of looks I'll get when I go to change everything and my maiden name is nowhere to be found on my current driver's license, SS card, etc. I'm assuming I can bring my birth certificate as proof of my maiden name. I'm pretty sure my marriage certificate does not have my maiden name on it, but I'm not entirely sure as it hasn't gotten here from Australia yet. TIA!

Re: Silly name change question!

  • You can change your name to whatever you want once you are an adult. If your name was Mary Jones and you wanted to Autumn Summer, you could do it as long as you bring all the right documents, a birth certificate and I don't know what else. To my knowledge (but I'm not an attorney), this is pretty standard. Celebrities change their names all the time to something entirely different, first and last names.

If I wanted to do what you are looking into, I'd look in the state's website to see what is required.
  • I did.  No one questioned me.  Of course very few people pay attention to your middle name.  The only thing is that my maiden starts with M, and everyone wants to make my middle name Marie.   Nice name, but not mine.  ~Donna
  • Thanks girls! I know you can change your name to any old thing, but I didn't want to have to do it via the courts, which is what you have to do here if you want to change it outside of just changing it due to marriage or divorce using the certificate or decree. When I got divorced, I did not check a box that stated I wanted my maiden name restored and therefore, I would have then had to pay over $300 and attend a hearing just to take my maiden name back! I mostly just want to ensure that as I really need to renew my passport once I get my marriage certificate and I didn't want it to delay the return of it.

  • If that's the case, then as pp stated, you will have to check the laws in your state. Some require the court hearing, publishing in the paper,  etc., if you change anything other than the last name.
