Mother of the bride dress

I am having an April wedding, end of April, outdoors.  I am looking at a dress for my mom, because she will probably not shop on her own.  Its long sleeved.  Is that appropriate, or will it be too hot and I should look for short sleeves something..?

Re: Mother of the bride dress

  • Agree with OP, take her shopping, don't be choosing her dress - that's not up to you.  Do you really think she won't go shopping for a dress at all for your wedding?
  • Ask her to go shopping with you. Even if she normally doesn't like shopping, since it's for your wedding, and if you volunteer to go with her and make a day of it, she might. I really think she needs to be there to find and try on a dress she likes that she is comfortable in.

  • Agree with PPs.  You should find a way to shop together with your mom.  If she's not the type to like going to the mall or whatnot, could you plan some time to shop online together?  If you looked together at mainstream retailers and department stores (I'm thinking Macy's, Ann Taylor, etc.), there are usually fair return policies in case what was selected didn't work for yor mom.

As far as the sleeves go, I'm not sure what your climate is like - cold? wet? warm?  Are your going to ask parents to participate in outside photos?  It might be best if the weather could go either way or if you are unsure about the temparture of your venue(s) to look for something with a jacket, wrap, or shawl to give your mom options.  But ask her what she'd prefer and shop with her.
