Picky MOH. Dress suggestions?

My MOH is my lil sister.  She is absolutely terrified of dresses- she doesn't like them, isn't comfortable in them, etc., etc.  She has agreed to about 3 different ones though, and I'm excited, but also wary.

First, she will not wear strapless.  She's bigger, and says it won't look right plus 'I don't have any boobs to hold it up.' she's 20 and really wasn't blessed with a chest, lol.

Second, floor length won't do, because she'll trip, and she won't wear even a small heel because she'll definitely trip.  So we've settled on tea-length.

Now my issue, I can't seem to find anything that matches what she'll wear.  We have 2 at David's Bridal to try on, and one I found a store locally that would have to be ordered.... But still.....She is so picky, I want to have backups, just in case....

Anyone have a website, store, etc., etc. to try out?  Thanks in advance!

  • joielle's got a bunch

How much do you care about the style? What other dresses or people will she have to match? I cared about the color for my bridesmaids, and some church/modesty issues (also their being warm in drafty buildings in November), but not much else. My bridesmaid and mother found 1 they liked at JCPenney ($60). My mother found another they like at Ross ($30). With only 2 bridesmaids, it was easy to get condensus on and find department store dresses in their size. (They're the same size - size 4 or 6 or so).

My point is, why not just let her choose a tea-length dress in your color and specified fabric (satin, chiffon, velvet, etc)? Or she can choose a handful, and you make the final choice.
  • I don't care about the style at all- she only has to match one other person, who also doesn't care about the style.  We've all 3 agreed, style doesn't matter, so long as it's the same color (Dark, Holly Green, and if that isn't available, Silver is the backup.)  I don't even have a preference on fabric.  She has been looking at designs and things with me online, but nothing is really coming up to what she likes.  If it's too long, we can hem it up, but most of the problem is finding something that isn't strapless.

I just pulled up Joielle's site now, thanks!

Then, depending on the personalities, I might let this picky bridesmaid choose, giving her some deadline. Meanwhile, you can trade links back and forth and she can go shopping with you or alone. This system has worked well for my family (bridesmaids are my sisters). Basically, the person who cared the most - Mom - did the searching. The rest of us didn't have to worry about it, and it looks like the bridesmaids' dresses will be taken care of before my dress, and for $30 each, which you can't beat.

Of course, we started looking 15 months before the wedding. We could do this because my sisters are much younger - no marriages or pregnancies coming into their lives. There are some issues insofar as one sister's shape changes depending on whether she's in an athletic season, and the other sister is on the other side of the world. We have to be content to not care too much about fit, or to get forgiving dresses, or to plan on alterations. But if you can delegate and keep people happy, go for it!
  • I've seen some designers have pantsuit outfits that coordinate with dress styles.  Maybe she'd be more comfortable in one of those?
  • my girls are wearing one from David's.  Tea length with straps. its really cute and fits all the girls really nicely.  This is the style Style F14556

    Good luck!
  • If she's so anti-dress, I don't understand why you're so adamant that she wear one. Dress pants or a suit would be appropriate wedding attire as well.

  • Another option to consider is to simply add straps or a halter strap, especially if you find a floor-length dress that needs to be hemmed, there should be plenty of fabric for a seamstress to add straps.  Maybe look for something with a slight sweetheart neckline since that will create a more natural spot to add straps (plus, it can be a lot more flattering for someone with a smaller chest.)

  • What about the convertible/ infinity dresses? I was looking at a site with them earlier and they even have it in a jumpsuit. While she's standing there no one would know it wasn't a dress and she'd be more comfortable. Lots of designers make them now but here is a link to the site I was looking at. http://www.kaykonvertibles.com/collections/classic-convertibles/products/jumpsuit-convertible-pants
